1. A steam power plant with a power output of 150 MW consumes coal at a rate of 60 tons/h.

If the heating value of the coal is 30,000 kJ/kg, determine the overall efficiency of this plant.
Answer: 30.0 percent

2. A heat engine operates between the maximum and minimum temperatures of

671°C and 60°C respectively, with an efficiency of 50% of the appropriate Carnot
efficiency. It drives a heat pump which uses river water at 4.4°C to heat a block of
flats in which the temperature is to be maintained at 21.1°C. Assuming that a
temperature difference of 11.1°C exists between the working fluid and the river
water, on the one hand, and the required room temperature on the other, and
assuming the heat pump to operate on the reversed Carnot cycle, but with a COP
of 50% of the ideal COP, find the heat input to the engine per unit heat output
from the heat pump. Ans: Heat input = 0.7877 kJ/kJ heat input to block.
3.

Take the enthalpy as: For R134a hi (at 1.2MPa and 50oC) = 278.28 kJ/kg
ho (at 1.2 MPa and 41.3oC (subcooled by 5oC)) = 110.19 kJ/kg

For water in condenser hi (at 18oC) = 75.54 kJ/kg

ho (at 26oC) = 109.07 kJ/kg

Ans: (a) mass flow rate of R134a = 0.0498 kg/s

(b) 5.07 kW (c) 1.54 (d) 4.49

4. A heat engine operating between two reservoirs at 1000 K and 300 K is used to drive a
heat pump which extracts heat from the reservoir at 300 K at a rate twice that at which the
engine rejects heat to it. If the efficiency of the engine is 40% of the maximum possible and
the COP of the heat pump is 50% of the maximum possible, what is the temperature of the
reservoir to which the heat pump rejects heat? What is the rate of heat rejection from the
heat pump if the rate of heat supply to the engine is 50 kW?
Ans: T = 326.58 K Rate of heat rejection = 86 kW

5. A reversible engine, as shown in Fig.3 during a cycle of operations draws 5 MJ from

the 400 K reservoir and does 840 kJ of work. Find the amount and direction of heat
interaction with other reservoirs.

Ans: Q2 = 5580kJ from engine, Q3 = 1420 kJ to engine
