1. Find two linearly independent solutions, in power series about 𝑥 = 0, of the ODE
𝑦 00 − 2𝑥𝑦 0 + 3𝑦 = 0. Get the recurrence relation of the coefficients. Write at least first four
nonzero terms of the power series.

2. Using Frobenius method, find two linearly independent solutions of the ODE
2𝑥 2𝑦 00 + 𝑥 (2𝑥 + 1)𝑦 0 − 𝑦 = 0. Get the recurrence relation of the coefficients. Write at least first
three nonzero terms of the power series.

3. Let 𝑃𝑛 (𝑥) denote the Legendre polynomial of degree 𝑛. Using its explicit form as a summation,
0 (𝑥), 𝑃 0 (𝑥) and 𝑃 (𝑥). Then, using this identity, express
derive an identity relating 𝑃𝑛+1 𝑛−1 𝑛
∫1
𝑃 (𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 in terms of 𝑃𝑛−1 (𝑎) and 𝑃𝑛+1 (𝑎), where 0 < 𝑎 < 1.
𝑎 𝑛

4. Let 𝐽𝑛 (𝑥) denote the Bessel function of the first kind and order 𝑛 for 𝑛 ∈ N. Express
∫𝑥
0
𝑡 𝑛 𝐽𝑛−1 (𝑡) 𝑑𝑡 in terms of 𝐽𝑛 (𝑥).

5. Find eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville problem 𝑥𝑦 00 + 𝑦 0 + 𝜆𝑥𝑦 = 0, where

𝑦 (2) = 0, and 𝑦 (𝑥) remains bounded in the interval 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2.
0 𝜆
6. Consider the Sturm-Liouville problem 𝑥𝑦 0 + 𝑦 = 0 for 0 < 𝑥 < 𝑒 with 𝑦 (1) = 0 and 𝑦 (𝑒) = 0.
𝑥
Using the transformation 𝑥 = 𝑒 𝑡 , transform the ODE to another involving 𝑑𝑦/𝑑𝑡, 𝑑 2𝑦/𝑑𝑡 2 . Using
the transformed equation and the corresponding transformed boundary conditions compute the
eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the original Sturm-Liouville problem.
