The first inhabitants of the Bahamas were the
Taínos, who moved to the uninhabited southern
islands from Hispaniola and Cuba around AD 800-
1000. C., after emigrating there from South
America; they became known as the Lucayan
people. Some 30,000 Lucayans are believed to have
inhabited the Bahamas at the arrival of Christopher
Columbus in 1492, but as always this cannot be fully
proven

During landed rule, the Bahamas became a haven
for pirates, including Blackbeard. To end the
"republic of pirates" and restore orderly
government, Great Britain made the Bahamas a
crown colony in 1718, nicknamed The Bahama
Islands.
Policy
The Bahamas is a hereditary constitutional
monarchy belonging to the Commonwealth of
Nations as an independent kingdom. The British
monarch, as head of state, is the one who
designates his representative in place, the Governor
General. Executive power is exercised by the
Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, an
institution that appears in 1955 with the first
parliamentary elections in the archipelago.
The Bahamas military consists of the Royal Bahamas
Defense Force (RBDF) The RBDF was created on
March 31, 1980. Its functions include the defense of
the Bahamas, the fight against drug smuggling,
illegal immigration and poaching, and assistance to
boaters.

Los primeros habitantes de las Bahamas fueron los

meridionales desde La Española y Cuba en torno a
los años 800-1000 d. C., tras emigrar allí desde
Sudamérica; se les llegó a conocer como el pueblo
lucayo.18 Se cree que unos 30.000 lucayos
habitaban las Bahamas a la llegada de Cristóbal
Colón en 1492,19pero como siempre esto no puede
ser demostrado completamente.

Durante el dominio terrateniente, las Bahamas se
convirtieron en refugio de piratas, entre ellos
Barbanegra. Para poner fin a la "república de los
piratas" y restaurar un gobierno ordenado, Gran
Bretaña convirtió las Bahamas en colonia de la
corona en 1718, a la que apodaron (The Bahama
Islands.
Politica
Las Bahamas es una monarquía constitucional
hereditaria que pertenece a la Mancomunidad de
Naciones en calidad de reino independiente. El
