Correlation Project

Discuss the following questions in your double buddy groups:

Is there a link between the length of someone’s outstretched arms (arm span) and their height?
What do you think? Make a prediction.

How about hand span and height? How about your pulse and your height? Make predictions.

What could you do to test your predictions?

How about: use a tape measure or ruler to measure the arm span, height and hand span; also take
the pulse of the pupils in your class.

To measure height and arm span you can borrow the tape measures during class.

Make sure you remove your shoes and you stand straight when your height is measured.
Preferably by the wall. TEAM WORK is the DREAM WORK. Help each other!

How to measure arm span? Facing away from the wall, with back and buttocks touching the wall,
the arms are stretched out horizontally. Measure from one furthermost finger tip to the other.

To check your pulse at your wrist, place two fingers between the bone and the tendon over your
radial artery — which is located on the thumb side of your wrist. When you feel your pulse, count
the number of beats in 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four to calculate your beats per

minute.

To find your hand span, the equipment required: flat surface and ruler or tape measure. The
procedure: The hand is placed palm down on a flat surface. The fingers are outstretched as far as
possible. Measure the linear distance between the outside of the thumb to the outside of the little
finger.

Record your results, so you don’t forget them. Organize your data in a table. Turn your results into
a graph. HAS TO BE DONE BY HAND – use paper and pencil NOT Excel…

(Think about the independent and dependent variables x and y axis, label them correctly! Give the
correct title to your graph… there is nothing worse than looking at an incomplete or incorrect
graph. Makes the data meaningless. ☹

Use the line of best fit to determine the type of correlation. Give the equation of your line of best
fit for all these three cases.

Explain what you found? Compare it with your predictions.

What are you handing in?

3 graphs (labeled, scaled, with clear titles)

Predictions with a little explanation.

Your findings: 3 equations, compared with what you predicted.

Brief summery of your work with reflections.

This is a group project in double buddy groups, so only one hand in per group is required. Make
sure all participated and share the work equally! Team work is the Dream work!!!!! 😊

Make sure you list the members of your buddy group on the hand in.

Deadline: Friday, August 18th

(This is very easy, can easily be done during the modules. Therefore, no excuse and no late work
will be accepted.)
