1.

A right triangle ABC is right-angled at C and points D and E are on sides AC and BC
respectively. Given that AD: DC=1:2 and CE: EB=2:1, and AE= 5 and BD= 12, find the
measure of the hypotenuse of the right triangle ABC.

Let AD=a, and DC=2a, CE=2b, and EB=b.

We can use Pythagorean Theorem to form equations

We need the value of 9𝑎2 + 9𝑏2 to get the value of AB 2

(3𝑎)2 + (2𝑏)2 = 52 ...eq 1

(2𝑎)2 + (3𝑏)2 = 122 ...eq 2

Simplify these

9𝑎2 + 4𝑏2 = 25 ...eq 1

4𝑎2 + 9𝑏2 = 144 ...eq 2

Add eq 1 and eq 2

13𝑎2 + 13𝑏2 = 169

𝑎2 + 𝑏2 = 13

9𝑎2 + 9𝑏2 = 117 = 𝐴𝐵2

𝐴𝐵 = √117 = 3√13

Therefore, the length of the hypotenuse of triangle ABC is 3√13 units

2. In parallelogram ABCD, AB=8 and AD= 5. Diagonals BD and AC are drawn with BD=10.
What is the area of triangle ABC?

The triangles ABD and ABC share the same base and have the same measure of height,
which means that the area of ABD is equal to the area of ABC. We can get the area of ABD
using Heron's Formula to also get the area of ABC.

Using the Heron's Formula

5+8+10 23
𝑠= =
2 2

23 23 23 23
𝐴 = √ 2 ( 2 − 5) ( 2 − 8) ( 2 − 10)

23 13 7 3
𝐴 = √ 2 ( 2 ) (2) (2)

6279 √6279
𝐴=√ =
16 4

√6279
Therefore, the area of triangle ABC is square units

3. In a regular hexagon ABCDEF with sides measuring 8cm, segments BD, DF, and BF are
drawn to form a triangle. Find the area of the triangle BDF.

Drawing a segment from point A to segment BF perpendicular to BF which is also the angle
bisector of angle BAF. Since the measure of an interior angle of a regular hexagon is 120°,
we can find the measure of the other angles and conclude that the triangle BDF is an
equilateral triangle. The measure of the angle bisected by the segment is 60°. This will form
a 30-60-90 special right triangle as shown in the figure. We can get that half the measure of
a side of the equilateral triangle is 4√3 based on the ratio of the sides of a 30-60-90 right
triangle. From this, we can get the measure of the sides of the equilateral triangle 8√3 units.

We can get the area of the equilateral triangle by using the formula

𝑠 2 √3
𝐴= where s is the measure of the side
4

Substituting s=8√3
2
(8√3) √3
𝐴= 4

192 √3
𝐴= 4

𝐴 = 48√3

Therefore the area of triangle BDF is 48√3 square units

4. In triangle ABC, points X and Y are on sides BC and AC, respectively. Let point Z be the point of
intersection of AX and BY. If the areas of triangle AYZ, AZB, and BZX are 3, 4, 5, respectively, find
the area of quadrilateral XCYR.
Solution:

1
C

X 28
36 Y
Z

63

A B
35 27

Since triangles AYZ and AZB has the same height, then the ratio of their areas is equal to
the ratio of their bases. Hence, [△AY Z] [Y Z] 3
[△AZB] = [BZ] = 4 . Thus, the mass on point Y is 4, the mass on
point B is 3, and the mass on point Z is 7. The same concept applies to triangles AZB and XZB.
[△AZB] [AZ]
Hence, [△XZB] = [XZ] = 45 . Thus, the mass on point A is 5, the mass on point X is 4, and the
mass on point Z is 9. But, since we have different mass on point Z, get the LCM of 7 and 9, which
is 63. Multiply the mass on points Y and B by 9 and multiply the mass on points A and X by 7
to balance the mass points. To get the mass on point C, subtract the mass on point A from the
mass on point Y. Now, we can use the same concept we applied earlier on the areas. Since the
triangles ACX and ABX have the same height, then the ratio of their areas is equal to the ratio of
[ACX] [CX]
their bases. Hence, [ABX] = [BX] = 27
1 = 27. Hence, the area of triangle ACX is 27 times the area
of ABX (27 × 9 = 243). To find the area of quadrilateral XCYR, subtract the area of AYZ from the
area of triangle ACX. Therefore, [XCY R] = [ACX] − [AY Z] = 243 − 3 = 240 .

5. When a cone, with radius 10 cm, is upside down (vertex pointing to the ground), the height of
the water from the vertex is 9 cm. If the water has a volume of 108π cubic cm, find the height of
the cone.
Solution:

10

Notice in the diagram that r is the radius of the cone where all the water is and 9 is its
height. Using the formula for the volume of cone,
1
V = πr2 h
3
1 2
108π = πr (9)
3
108π = 3πr2
r2 = 36
r=6

Notice that the two triangles are similar. Let h be the height of the cone. Using the concept
of similar triangles,

h 10
=
9 6
9 · 10
h=
6
h = 15

Therefore, the height of the cone is 15 cm .
