A. REVIEW MOTIVATION
1. Show a short video clip of a famous author
talking about the importance of using dictionaries
and online resources to improve vocabulary skills.
2. Conduct a word association activity where
students have to guess the meaning of unfamiliar
words based on context clues.
3. Share interesting facts about words and their
origins to pique students' curiosity.
Activity 1: Using Dictionaries
Materials: Dictionaries, vocabulary worksheets
Instructions:
1. Introduce the concept of dictionaries and their
purpose.
2. Model how to use a dictionary to find the
meaning of a word.
3. Provide students with vocabulary worksheets
containing unfamiliar words.
4. In pairs or small groups, students use
dictionaries to find the meanings of the words.
5. Assess their understanding by asking
questions related to the words they researched.
Assessment Questions:
Word Guessing Game - Write a list of words on the
board and have students take turns guessing the
meaning of each word. This will create curiosity and
engage students in thinking about the importance of
clarifying word meanings.
Vocabulary Olympics - Divide the class into teams
and have a vocabulary competition. Provide a list of
words and ask each team to find the correct meaning
using dictionaries or online resources. The team with
the most correct answers wins.
Word Detective - Show students a short paragraph
with unfamiliar words and challenge them to use
dictionaries or online resources to find the meanings.
This will encourage students to see themselves as
word detectives

containing words that need synonym suggestions.
4. In pairs or small groups, students use
thesauruses to find synonyms for the given
words.
5. Assess their understanding by asking them to
use the synonyms in sentences.

meanings. Discuss how utilizing these tools can

various situations.
4. ASSESSMENT Teachers can assess students' learning by:
1. Observing their participation and engagement
during the activities.
2. Reviewing their completed vocabulary
worksheets and assessing the accuracy of their
word definitions and synonym suggestions.

B. ASSIGNMENT Ask students to choose five unfamiliar words from
a book they are currently reading. They should
use dictionaries, thesaurus, or online resources to
find the meanings of these words and write
sentences using each word correctly. The
assignment should be submitted in written or
digital format.
