Lesson: Solving Real-Life Problems Involving GCF and LCM of Two Given Numbers

Content Standards: Demonstrates understanding of factors and multiplies and addition and
subtraction of fractions.

Performance Standards: Is able to apply knowledge of factors and multiplies, and addition and
subtraction of fractions in mathematical problems and real-life situations.

Learning Competency: Solves real-life problems involving GCF and LCM Of 2 given
numbers.

Activity 1

Solve the following problems.

1. Write three prime numbers with a sum of 39.

2. John and Kathy went fishing. John caught 18 fish and Kathy caught 30 fish. What is the
greatest number of fish each could catch per hour if they caught the same number of fish
per hour?

3. If the GCF of three numbers is 45, how small can the smallest of the three numbers be?

4. If the GCF of two numbers is 36, what are some of the prime factors of each number?

Activity 2

Name the two numbers that fit the description.

1. They are relatively prime. Each number is a prime number.

2. They are relatively prime. One number is even.

3. The product of three whole numbers is 1 100. The three numbers have no common
factors, what are the numbers?

4. Fifteen pears, 25 apples, and 35 oranges are to be packed in 2 or more baskets.

a. What is the least number of baskets needed if each basket has the same number of
pears, apples, and oranges?

b. How many pears will be in each basket? How many apples? How many oranges?

Activity 3

Solve the following problems.

1. Three night watchmen walk around inspecting buildings in a shopping center. The
watchmen take 9, 12, and 14 minutes, respectively, for the inspection trip. If they start at
the same time, in how many minutes will they meet? How many inspection trips will
each watchman have made?

2. Suppose three weather satellites A, B and C orbit the earth at different times. A takes 18
hours, B takes 14 hours, and C takes 10 hours. If they are directly above each other now
in how many hours will they again be directly above each other?

3. Elizabeth has a book report due every 5 weeks and a science report due every 6 weeks.
There are 42 school weeks. Will both reports ever be due on the same week?

4. At a bus station, the bus bound for Batangas arrives every 2 hours and the bus for Lucena
arrives every 3 hours. They arrive together at 1:00 p.m. (a) What is the next time they are
due to arrive together? (b) How many times will they arrive together in 24 hours?

Activity 4

Solve the following problems.

1. What is the smallest sum you can get with the factors of 12?

2. What is the smallest sum you can get with the factors of 19?

3. Four salespersons leave the main office on the same day. It takes 10 days, 12 days, 15
days, and 18 days, respectively, for each salesperson to reach their sales regions. (a) In
how many days will they all meet again at the head office? (b) How many trips will each
have made?
