In this module, you will be able to identify and prepare raw

materials including the needed tools and Personal Protective equipment in
the fermentation of Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN). You will be learning also
the needed number of days to complete the fermentation process, proper
procedure, and the technique how you to harvest from OHN 1 going to
OHN2.

changes in organic substrates through the action of enzymes.
_____2. Molasses can be used as substitute if cooked rice is not available.
_____3. One of the ingredients needed in the fermentation process of
Indigenous Microorganism (IMO) is jar.
_____4. Fixing the jar in place with a rubber band prevent water or small
insects from getting in.
_____5. Harvest IMO after 21 days

2
What’s New

Immune Booster (OHN 1) 1-10 days of fermentation

Animal Booster nutrition gives animal and plants health a lots of
advantages along with keeping up the health of the immunity system.

Natural Pest Repellent (OHN 2) more than 10 days of fermentation

It is use throughout the early, vegetative and change over period and
fruit stages.
An insect repellent (also commonly called "bug spray") is a substance
applied to skin, clothing, or other surfaces which discourages insects (and
arthropods in general) from landing or climbing on that surface. Insect
repellents help prevent and control the outbreak of insect-borne (and other
arthropod-bourn) diseases such as malaria, Lyme disease, dengue fever,
bubonic plague, river blindness and West Nile fever. Pest animals commonly
serving as vectors for disease include insects such as flea, fly, and mosquito;
and the arachnid tick .

What is It

Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN)-a very important input in Natural Farming.

It is made from herbs which are full of energy and function to increase plant
robustness, to sterilize and keep plants warm. OHN revitalizes crops and
activates their growth. A fermented extract of herbs, is used in Natural
Farming to provide plants and soil microorganisms with micro-nutrients,
which may optimize their resilience to environmental stresses (wind, heat,
drought, etc.). OHN 1 will serve as immune boosters to plant and animals,
while OHN 2 will serve as insect repellent.

Materials in fermenting OHN1 to OHN 2

1. Makabuhay/Panyawan (Tinospora rumphii Boerl) - is a synonym of
Tinospora crispa (L.) Hook. Makabuhay is a climbing, dioecious vine
reaching a height of 4 to 10 meters. Anti-scabies: Tinospora rumphii Boerl.
This is used to produce Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN).

3
CHINESE: Bo ye qing niu dan, Fa leng teng.
FRENCH: Liane-quinine.
THAI: Bora phet, Chung ching, Kuakhohoo (Don ...
MALAYSIA: Akar patawali, Akar seruntum.

2. Chili/Pepper - It is used to combine with the other ingredients in

Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN) making to be used as insect repellent. Chili
peppers contain a substance called capsaicin, which gives peppers their
characteristic pungency, producing mild to intense spice when eaten. The
hotter the chili pepper, the more capsaicin it contains. The hottest varieties
include habanero and Scotch bonnet peppers. Though capsaicin is in
some repellents, those are meant to be used on plants to repel entirely
different insects, including aphids, whiteflies and thrips.

3. Ginger root - is beige in color with a knotted, rough appearance. The part
of the plant above the ground is a foot long upright stem with long, narrow
leaves. Ginger flowers are small and white or yellow-green in color. The
usable part of the root is a rhizome, which is how the plant propagates itself.
It has preventive characteristic of bacterium formation and it is beneficial in
producing Oriental Herbal Nutrient. A good source of vitamin C,
magnesium, potassium, copper, and manganese, ginger is listed as an
herbal medicine with carminative effects: a substance that promotes the
release of intestinal gas. It's also an intestinal spasmolytic, which relaxes
and soothes the intestinal tract. That means it can settle an upset stomach,
relieve vomiting, and ease gas and diarrhea discomfort; but it's also effective
in preventing nausea in the first place.

4
4. Onion (Allium cepa L.) - is one of the most consumed and grown
vegetable crops in the world. Onion bulb, with its characteristic flavor, is the
third most essential horticultural spice with a substantial commercial value.
Apart from its culinary virtues, A. cepa is also used traditionally for its
medicinal virtues in a plethora of indigenous cultures. A. cepa was found to
possess a panoply of bioactive compounds and numerous pharmacological
properties, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-
inflammatory, anti-diabetic, hypo lipid, anti-hypertensive, and immune
protective effects. This is one of the important ingredients in OHN making.

5. Garlic cloves - are used for consumption (raw or cooked) or for medicinal
purposes. They have a characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and
sweetens considerably with cooking. Other parts of the garlic plant are also
edible. Garlic is also used to mix with the other ingredients in OHN 1 and
OHN 2 production.

6. Molasses- is a viscous product resulting from refining sugarcane or sugar

beets into sugar. Molasses varies by amount of sugar, method of extraction,
and age of plant.

5
7. Native Vinegar/Tuba - Wilderness Family has coconut vinegar made
from the sap of the coconut tree (called Tuba). Tuba is collected from the
stem that "feeds" the coconuts. A "Tuba Collector" climbs to the top of the
coconut tree and clips the stem that contains flowers and baby coconuts.
Then a collection vessel is hung from the tree and the stem placed so the
sap will run into it. In organic concoctions and extracts, tuba is advisable to
use.

Fermentation Period-30 days

Fermentation Process

Ingredients:

1 kilo of crushed ginger

1 kilo of crushed garlic
1 kl of crushed pepper/Panyawan
1 kilo of muscovado/brown sugar or molasses
10 liters of vinegar 30 to 40 proof

Materials
Coco crude cloth or paper
Rubber band or string
Container or jar
Basin, marker
Casserole

Procedure:

6
1. Weigh 1 kilogram of onions, garlic, and ginger.
2. Slice the ingredients into small pieces.

3. Mix some of the ingredients (1 kg, crushed garlic/onions, 1 kg. crushed

ginger, and 1 kg muscovado sugar inside the clean container.

4. Put and boil 1 liter of molasses or 1 kilo of muscovado sugar inside the
casserole in a moderate fire. Add slice crushed garlic/onions, and ginger.
Then boil it within 5 minutes.

Note: Do not include the Makabuhay here keep it in a separate basin. Please
see the instruction below under harvesting so that you will know when to
add Makabuhay in your mixture.

5. Let it cool. After cooling put the mixture and store it inside the jar cover
and keep it sealed using coco crude cloth or paper and rubber band. After
three days, add 10 liters of vinegar. Keep the jar sealed again.

Note: See to it that the jar is not fully filled. Leave at least 2 inches unfilled.

6. Label it with the date of production and the date when to harvest

7
What’s More

How to harvest extracts for OHN 1 (Serve as immune booster).

1. Draw off the liquid after 10 days. The first extract is good for animal
immune booster.

2. Together with other juices, fermented fruit juice, fermented plant

juice, and fish amino acid, Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN) is
incorporated in the animal feeds.

For OHN 2 (Serve as insect repellent)

3. After the 2nd procedure, add the same amount of vinegar taken
from the first extraction. For stronger potency fresh or dry chili, Neem
tree fruit, curry fruit, Makabuhay (Panyawan in cebuano), 3 bottles of
Mallorca and marigold can be added.

4. After 10 days, extract the juice again. The extracted juice for the
second time is good for use in growing plants as insect repellent.

5. For the 3rd time, add the same amount of vinegar taken. After 10
days, extract the liquid again.
