What Is It

HANDLING AND PACKAGING HARVESTED CROPS

Have you observed the products that you are buying? Can you
tell something about your observations? Fruit crops need careful handling
to ensure that these can be sold at a profitable price. Proper handling of
harvested crops increases the market price of the products. Farmers
should know how to handle his harvest in order to get the most out of it.
Remember you are not only producing for your own but if you will
produce quality product your friend or neighbor might be your first
customer. Later, you will be having more buyers. Unknowingly you are
already an entrepreneur so it is important to acquire skills on how to pack
your products. Creativity should be applied to produce quality packaging.
Entrepreneurs should always think of ways and means to attract or
encourage their buyers to buy their products. One of these are the proper
sorting, labelling then packaging. Products must be packed individually
and labelled according to brand, the date when manufactured and where
it was manufactured.

Techniques In handling harvested crops

• Use of containers or crates with liners

• Place harvested crops in temporary shed to prevent from wilting and
sun scalding

Post-harvest handling processes:

1. Cleaning – fruit crops are cleaned by washing before they are

disposed. This process removes dirt, freshen the produce, and may
remove spray residues. In some cases, wiping the product with a
clean, dry and soft cloth gives better result than washing.
2. Sorting and Grading – harvested fruit should be sorted properly
before grading. In grading, fruits should be grades according to size,

3
shape, ripeness and color. Grading increases the market potential of
products.
3. Packaging – after sorting/grading, fruits are packed carefully to
smooth containers.
 Care should be properly observed to prevent blemishes and
damages to the fruits.
 When packing fruits, they must be arranged properly in
containers according to size and quality.
4. Transporting – Careful handling and transporting of packed fruits
prevent them from being damaged.

Tips in Transporting packed fruits

blemishes and cracks on the fruits placed at the bottom of the

piling small containers.
3. Do not make the pile too high to prevent containers on the top to fall.
4. Never step on the pile that you made.

vehicles, careful driving should be done to prevent damages to the
products.
