Writing Skill Diagnostic

I will be discussing the following topics: my experience choosing my career, previous academic
writing experiences, which great communicator I admire, and the last my strengths and weaknesses in
communication.

I started an undergraduate program in biomedical engineering when I was 16 years old. I found it
interesting because I wanted to study engineering, thus I researched options, and Biomedical was the most
interesting one. After I finished the program, I could work only for a year in the field before I immigrated
to Canada. Once I settled in Canada, I had multiple jobs in warehouses, and while working there I
realized how interested I was in going back to my field. But before I could do it, I needed time to learn
the language and prepare myself for college. I chose BCIT because unlikely other universities the
structure of the program is exclusively for BMET (not five hundred students of all programs in a math
class), every course has a focus on BMET, and BCIT is specialized in teaching. Those aspects were
important to me when choosing my college. After I graduate from BMET, I would like to earn work
experience in a hospital or private company, and additionally, I would like to study Technology
Management after getting the work experience needed to complete this program.

English as a second language for me has been challenging, especially writing, because years
before I realize I was getting better at reading and listening but my writing skills were not so much, for
that reason I choose a program in Academic English at Conestoga College in 2020 where I learned
especially grammar, the structure for writing essays, and how to do correct citations, etc. My writing was
evaluated by writing an essay, re-doing the same assignment but correcting my mistakes, and adding what
we were learning in class to the same essay. Later in 2021, I did the online course COMM-0005 skills 4 at
BCIT which was focused on communication in business, writing emails properly, using concrete
language, and some grammar as well, etc. In my opinion, the best way of improving my writing skills is
to write constantly and learn from my mistakes. Getting feedback, correcting my own mistakes, and
making repetitions is the best way for me to improve my writing.

I admire my English professors because they communicate with a wide variety of vocabulary to
express a specific idea that even though I don’t know all the words I can understand them clearly. Their
ability to speak to the public, and to explain with examples requires huge knowledge. I would like to
communicate like them, and for that I understand it implicates more reading, learning new vocabulary,
and lots of practice.

I think when I am speaking, I can make other people understand my idea. however, I struggle
when talking mostly when I am introducing myself to people, I don’t feel confident enough so I tend to
make even more mistakes. I still have a lot to learn, I am still on that curve of learning the language, and I
am happy to improve my communication skill. I also think my speaking and writing skills are the most
difficult ones which requires my attention and dedication to improve them.

In conclusion, communication is a very important skill in professional career, therefore it is

important to dedicate time as well because it is an essential tool when working in our field.
