PLAY
12–18 month /× Note
During play, the child intentionally shows an object of interest to a carer and
shows signs of curiosity in expectation of an adults response e.g. to
comment on colour, size or name of the object.
Play is focussed on items of immediate interest but typically at this stage
there is no co-operative play.
Simple pretend play is evident for example imitating the use of telephone,
placing objects in a basket to go shopping, feeding a doll etc.
During play, the child uses one object or action functionally e.g. using a
spoon to stir, pretending to drink form a cup, drawing with a crayon.
The child begins to use an item for symbolic play. For example, the child
may pretend a shoe is a telephone by holding it to his ear.
The child explores toys e.g. the child rotates an object, investigates if
another object will fit inside another object etc.

18-24 month
Typically the child will begin to explore objects in more complex ways e.g.
no longer using his mouth to explore objects.
During play the child begins to functionally combine two items or actions
e.g. the child stirs with a spoon and pretends to feed an object or person with
a spoon.
The child begins to imitate familiar routines e.g. washing dishes, getting
ready to leave home, meal times and other familiar activities or routines.
The child begins to build a tower with bricks and will break the tower into
pieces.

Says simple greetings and responses such as thank you and goodbye
Shows awareness that their nappy needs changing

During play, the child begins to initiate activities with other children and will
share motivating items.
Will begin to imitate less familiar routines e.g. visiting a doctor, dentist or other
less frequent activities.
The child uses one object in multiple ways e.g. pretending a pen can also be used as a key to open
a door, using a towel familiar to bath time as a blanket for a baby.
