SIMPLE SOLO FOR DESCENT 2nd Edition

Martin Knight 2021 (V1.0)

The purpose of this variant is to automate the Overlord player so that a campaign game can be played solo.
It is also designed so the player only uses 1 Hero, and does not need to use the app. The variant has been
created for use with the base game. It may work with the expansions, but none have been tested.

OVERLORD CARDS
Make the following changes to the Overlord cards.
1. Split the overlord cards into four piles, based on their XP value (i.e. Basic, 1xp, 2xp and 3xp).
2. Remove from the game the BASIC overlord card: Dark Charm.
3. Take 4 random 1xp cards and place face up on the table.
4. Divide the remaining 1xp cards into 3 piles of 4 cards face up on the table.
5. Add 2 random 2 xp cards face up to each of the three piles from step 4.
6. Add 1 random 3 xp card face up to each of the three piles from step 4 and 5.
7. Shuffle each of the piles from step 4-6 and add them to the pile from step 3 (face up).
8. Flip over the stack of cards, this is the overlords XP DECK.
9. The BASIC overlord cards are the overlords DRAW DECK.

OVERLORD XP
When the overlord earns xp, if the top card has not already been flipped over, flip it over and place it on
top of the XP DECK; then place 1 fatigue counter on top of the card. If the number of fatigue counters on
top of the XP DECK is ever equal to the xp cost of the top card, the fatigue counters are removed and the
card is placed in the overlords DRAW DECK.

THE OVERLORD
The overlord’s hand is played face up in a row beside the DRAW DECK. Whenever a card can be
activated, it is played immediately. The game will dictate when something will occur that triggers a card to
be played. You play the overlord in order to win the game from the overlords perspective. You will need to
play to destroy you hero, or the game will seem less challenging for the hero.

SETTING UP AND PLAYING THE GAME

Set up and play the game as per the rules with the following changes and modifications:
1. The overlord draws 2 cards in to his hand (played face up beside the DRAW DECK) at the start of a game.
2. Remove from the game the card “NOTHING” from the search deck.
3. Open groups are drawn randomly from the monster groups allowed by the quest.
4. Choose 1 Hero Sheet.
5. The hero uses both class sets available to their archetype (i.e. Syndrael gets the Berserker and
Knight class sets). You get all basic skill cards and may spend xp on any skill card from either of the
two class sets. You could try mixing the class sets from different archetypes to create heroes such as:
Berserker-Theif or Runemaster-Knight; however, please note, these have not been tested.
6. The hero gets 4 actions per turn, but only 2 can be movement actions.
7. The hero’s health is double the value shown.
8. When the hero stands up after a KO do not end turn, instead it uses 2 of their 4 actions for the turn.
9. The hero may equip 4 hands, 1 armour and 4 other.
10. Monster Groups are created for 2 players. All other rules regarding player numbers are for 2 players.
