What good did the People Power Revolution made?

The 1987 Philippine Constitution was made to replace the previous constitution from
1973, which was in effect during the martial law era. The new constitution was created to
restore democratic institutions, protect individual rights, and establish a system of
checks and balances between the branches of government. It was also intended to
provide a framework for the transition from authoritarianism to democracy in the
Philippines.

Preamble
We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just
and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and
aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to
ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of
law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and
promulgate this Constitution.

ARTICLES 2: DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES AND STATE POLICIES PRINCIPLES

Sec 1 The Philippines is a democratic and republican State. Sovereignty resides in the
people and all government authority emanates from them.

Sec 3 Civilian authority is, at all times, supreme over the military. The Armed Forces of the
Philippines is the protector of the people and the State. Its goal is to secure the sovereignty
of the State and the integrity of the national territory.

Sec 5 The maintenance of peace and order, the protection of life, liberty, and property, and
the promotion of the general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all the people of the
blessings of democracy.

ARTICLE III: BILL OF RIGHTS

Sec 4 Freedom of press No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of
expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the
government for redress of grievances.

PROCLAMATION:

Proclamation 42 signed by the President said the 37th anniversary of the Edsa
People Power Revolution “ushered [in] political, social and economic reforms in the
country.” It also cited the need to commemorate the death anniversary of Aquino.
