GROUP 2: BOOK REVIEW & ARTICLE CRITIQUE

(NEWSCASTING)

RICHMOND: Good morning, and welcome to our morning segment on book reviews
and article critiques. I'm Richmond Magramo, and today I'm joined by Justine Visca.

JUSTINE: Thank you, Richmond. Today, we'll be discussing the essentials of writing a
book review and an article critique.

RUIZ: Let's start with book reviews. A book review is a descriptive and critical analysis
of a book that includes its subject, strengths, weaknesses, and context.
KENNETH: It's important to read and understand the material first, take down notes,
and write down essential elements such as the title, theme, summary, characters,
mood, tone, author's writing style, language use, and purpose.

KIER: The book review should provide a comprehensive analysis of the material and
not just be a summary of the book. It should be neatly organized with an introduction,
body, and conclusion.

LEILAH: In the introduction, mention the title, year or date of publication, author's
name, and a brief summary of the book or main points of the article. Come up with a
thesis statement that indicates your main argument or evaluation of the book.

RUIZ: The body is the analysis and evaluation part of the review. Ask questions like
what is the setting, theme, plot, characterization, and other significant literary devices
used by the author?

KENNETH: Analyze how these literary elements contribute to the overall meaning of
the book. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the book and how it is similar or
different from other books in the same genre.
KIER: Lastly, in the conclusion, summarize your overall discussion or evaluation of the
book. Do not give away the ending to the readers and support your opinions with
evidence.

LEILAH: Moving on to article critiques, an article critique is a specialized form of

academic writing in which a reviewer evaluates the contribution to the knowledge of
scholarly works such as academic books and journal articles.

RUIZ: The article critique has four main parts: introduction, summary, critique, and
conclusion.

KENNETH: In the introduction, include the author's name(s) and the title of the article.
State the author's main point and a thesis statement that previews your analysis.

KIER: The summary discusses the main points, arguments, and findings of the article.

LEILAH: In the critique, discuss the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses of the
article. State informed opinions about the clarity, relevancy, and accuracy of the article,
using specific examples from the article to support the statements.

RUIZ: Finally, in the conclusion, summarize the key points in the article, as well as your
analysis. End with a comment about the significance of the research or a statement of
future research needed in the field.

VISCA: Thank you, everyone, for sharing your insights on book reviews and article
critiques. We hope this information will be helpful to our viewers.

RICHMOND: That's all for now. Join us again for more informative segments on
various topics. Have a great day!
