Non-Negotiables

For A Consulting CV
Components
A consulting resume should be black
and white, with four primary sections:
Education, Work Experience,
Extracurricular Activities, and other
information. Each part must be filled
with extremely result-oriented and
data-driven content (i.e., facts and
numbers to demonstrate
accomplishments) and written in
professional and concise language.
Consulting
resumes should look
data-driven
The first characteristic of consulting-
style resumes is that they are data-
driven and result-oriented. Whatever
the task, you must clearly
demonstrate the outcome/impact of
that task and back it up with
measurable numbers. This
demonstrates output-driven thinking,
which consultants adore!
Consulting
resumes should look
data-driven
EXAMPLE
Input way of thinking: “I went
grocery shopping.”
Output way of thinking: "I went
grocery shopping and made sure my
entire family would have enough
food for the next week."
Consulting
resumes should look
explicit
The best method to talk about
yourself in consulting resumes is
to include objective information.
Screeners aren't interested in your
view of yourself. Allow your
accomplishments to make a case
for yourself.
Consulting
resumes should look
explicit
EXAMPLE
We don't say, "had excellent
negotiation skills."
We write, "negotiated the largest
deal in company history,
resulting in XX% revenue
increase..."
Consulting
resumes should look
specific
Effective people always speak in
detail. Consulting individuals are
shaped to be specific. They are also
taught to ask follow-up inquiries
whenever they encounter non-
specific communication. So if you
write vaguely in your resume, the
screeners will pick up on it right
away.
Consulting
resumes should look
specific
EXAMPLE
I had just returned from the Paragliding
World Cup.
"I finished strong" is a vague way of
bragging.
"I ranked third out of 90 pilots in the
competition," is something a specific
person will state.
Consulting
resumes should look
conservative
This is analogous to the way one
dresses for interviews: as conservatively
as possible. Conservatives should be
viewed as professionals in this context.
Consultants are looking for creativity in
your content, not in your resume
structure. Using creative formats is the
quickest way to get eliminated.
Formatting
Format-wise, this resume strictly
followed the standard, conservative
format of a consulting resume:
One page resume
Black and white texts
Traditional fonts (Times New
Roman)
Small font size (10-12 points)
Ordinary margins and spacing
No colourful or vibrant designs

EXPLICITLY DISPLAY CONSULTING SKILLS
SCREENERS LOOK FOR
Write your resume bullets in a style that
demonstrates consulting skills. Consulting firms
look for three characteristics in their
candidates:
Leadership: The ability to guide others and
work well in groups.
Achieving: The willingness to go above and
beyond criteria to get the best results.
Problem-solving skill: The ability to solve
problems in an organized, top-down
manner.

WRITE GREAT BULLETS
Each bullet is a component of a strong
resume. There is no way out. We must
write amazing bullets based on less-than-
perfect experiences over and over again.
An excellent bullet usually consists of three
parts:
The project
Description of the project
The result

USE PROFESSIONAL AND STRUCTURED
LANGUAGE
Consultants are systematic and strategic in
every job they do, so make sure this feature
is evident in your resume writing as well!
Always keep your statements and
explanations professional, structured,
consistent, specific, and concise.

DOUBLE-CHECK, TRIPLE-CHECK,
QUADRUPLE-CHECK
Before submitting a consultant CV, it
should be reviewed at least a dozen times.
You must go over everything again and
again to iron out any potential faults.
The best technique is to solicit much
feedback, particularly from a working or
former consultant who understands exactly
what screeners look for.

Additionally, browse for other applicants'
resumes, compare the quality of your CV to
theirs, and see if there is anything you can
learn from them. Your CV is the first
impression, the window through which
consulting firms can see all you've done in
your life. It is also the initial step toward a
career in consulting.
