The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimanline
In this reflection about Marrow Thieves, the world, which is nearly destroyed through global warming,
where people are being exploited by the government, and are being harvested for their bone marrow, these factors
are the most striking aspects, also the characters and their journey to survive in this destroyed world which has lost
its empathy and humanity. In order to the people who hold power against indigenous people of North America, their
bone marrow carries the key to obtain something that others have lost. The characters are indigenous people, who
are also young and most of them have lost their families.

Faced with ruthless exploitation, the protagonists go through a bleak landscape where trust is scarce and ev-
erywhere they go, they face danger. Through the character struggles and the sacrifices, they have made, it shows
how solidarity and the refusal to let despair play an important role. Despite the darkness and all the negativity every
character goes through, “The Marrow Thieves” beautifully describes the power of hope. Hope becomes the only
thing that keeps them going. All the characters develop new relationships and have each other’s backs.

This book also portrays environmental destruction and social commentary. It indirectly describes the envi-
ronmental challenges we face in the present world. Dimaline also relates to a future ravaged by environmental
degradation. This part of the novel stood out to me as it prompts us to reflect on the urgency of addressing global
warming and climate change, as well as how important it is to save our planet for our future generations.

To conclude, “The Marrow Thieves” is a very thought-provoking novel that personally made me confront
the darkness that lies within human nature. Also, compelling towards the fact that our own humanity is the only
thing that can save us and how a future can be built on understanding and empathy.
