1 Childhood is the time when there are a few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good
2 parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is improbable that he will ever
3 again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is
4 always presenting new things to the child - things that have lost its interest for older people

Phương Chi 3
5 because they are too well-known. A child finds pleasure playing in the rain, or in the snow. His
6 first visit to the seaside is a marvelous adventure. Therefore, a child has his pain. He is not so
7 free to do as he wishes as he thinks older people are: he is continually told not to do things, or
8 being punished for what he has done wrong. His life is therefore not perfectly happy.
9 When a young man starts to take his own living, he becomes free from the discipline of school
10 and parents, but at the same time he is forced to accept responsibilities. He can no longer expect
11 other to pay for his food, his clothes and his room, but he has to work if he wants to live
12 comfortable. If he spends most time play about in a day he used to as a child, he will be hungry.
13 And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to
14 prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of troubles and has good health, he can have the
15 greatest happy of seeing himself make steady progress in his job and of building up for himself
his own position in society.

Part 3. (20 pts) Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the
questions. Write your answers A, B, C or D in the corresponding numbered boxes provided.
Personality and health
There is increasing evidence that health is linked to personality. However, until now, the relationship has
not affected the way health care is delivered. There are several reasons for this. Some health workers
doubt whether there is a direct link between health and personality or whether it’s just a coincidence.
Some feel it is their professional duty to treat all patients in the same way. Others argue that delivering
health services according to patients’ personalities will have minimal impact and therefore isn’t worth the
effort. However, some psychologists believe that applying different procedures to people with different
personalities could have a significant, positive effect on health.

Research into personality has, in recent years, focused on the Big Five model of personality types. This
model measures how neurotic, extrovert, open to experience, agreeable and conscientious a person is.
Some of these personality types have been studied in relation to health. For example, conscientious
people tend to be less likely to smoke, drink too much alcohol or be inactive. However, in other cases, the
relationship is less clear. Neurotic behaviour, for instance, has been found in some studies to increase the
risk of death, in others to protect people from illness and in others to have no link to health at all.

Even so, if health workers applied an understanding of personality to the services they provide, they could
influence the extent to which patients act on advice and follow their treatment. For example, high
Phương Chi 5
sensation-seeking individuals, who are extroverts and unconscientious in the Big Five model and tend to
take part in risky activities, respond to drama, energy and emotion. Thus, to encourage those people to
follow health advice, health promotions can be designed to incorporate those factors. An example of this
was the campaign SENTAR which aimed to reduce cannabis use among high sensation-seeking
teenagers. By creating a suitable television advert, they successfully engaged these youths and reduced
their recreational drug use. Of course, this approach isn’t always possible. It is often impractical and
expensive to create several versions of a campaign to reach different personality types. However, recent
developments in computer technology, cookies and targeted advertising may allow this approach to be
used more in future.

Personality could also be considered when sending messages, information and guidance to specific
patients. Already, health information is usually available in various forms – printed, digital, audio, and so
on – to be suitable and accessible for different users, such as the blind, the elderly, and people with
reading difficulties. Research has also shown that, by identifying different patients’ motivations for
treatment and then corresponding with them in a way that reflects their motivations, patients will become
more involved in their treatment, compared to when the same messages are sent to everyone.
Correspondence could, therefore, be adapted to reflect patients’ personality type, too. For example, less
conscientious people could be sent phone reminders to attend appointments. So far, there has been very
little research into the effectiveness of tailoring health guidance according to personality, so this area
deserves further study.

Until now, the focus of personality-health research has been to explore the link between personality and
health and has had very little practical application. Thus, health workers have not engaged deeply with it.
However, by suggesting, trialing and implementing practices to engage patients with different
personalities, the relationship between psychology researchers and health workers could improve, along
with the health of the general public.

Part 4. (20 pts) Read the following passage and do the tasks that follow.

BENEFICIAL WORK PRACTICES FOR THE KEYBOARD OPERATOR

A. Sensible work practices are an important factor in the prevention of muscular fatigue; discomfort or pain
in the arms, neck, hands or back; or eye strain which can be associated with constant or regular work
at a keyboard and visual display unit (VDU).

B. It is vital that the employer pays attention to the physical setting such as workplace design, the office
environment, and placement of monitors as well as the organization of the work and individual work
habits. Operators must be able to recognize work-related health problems and be given the opportunity
to participate in the management of these. Operators should take note of and follow the preventive
measures outlined below.

C. The typist must be comfortably accommodated in a chair that is adjustable for height with a back rest
that is also easily adjustable both for angle and height. The back rest and sitting ledge (with a curved
edge) should preferably be cloth-covered to avoid excessive perspiration.

D. When the keyboard operator is working from a paper file or manuscript, it should be at the same
distance from the eyes as the screen. The most convenient position can be found by using some sort of
holder. Individual arrangement will vary according to whether the operator spends more time looking at
the VDU or the paper – whichever the eyes are focused on for the majority of time should be put
directly in front of the operator.

E. While keying, it is advisable to have frequent but short pauses of around thirty to sixty seconds to
proofread. When doing this, relax your hands. After you have been keying for sixty minutes, you should
have a ten-minute change of activity. During this spell it is important that you do not remain seated but
stand up or walk around. This period could be profitably used to do filing or collect and deliver
documents.
Phương Chi 7
F. Generally, the best position for a VDU is at right angles to the window. If this is not possible then glare
from the window can be controlled by blinds, curtains or movable screens. Keep the face of the VDU
vertical to avoid glare from overhead lighting.

G. Unsatisfactory work practices or working conditions may result in aches or pain. Symptoms should be
reported to your supervisor early on so that the cause of the trouble can be corrected and the operator
should seek medical attention.
