Smart Starts for New Hires

Tips on the types of behaviors that will help you be successful in a new role:

 Ask as many questions as you have, and listen and clarify to ensure you understand expectations
and/or next steps, for example:
o I understand the situation to be that the system will be covered in training over the next
two weeks.
o You’re saying I should set up my meet and greets with these leaders first.
o I should see an invite to the team meetings come through today?

 Identify other resources and business partners, both in and out of the organization, with whom
you need to meet early in your tenure and start building relationships.

 Make sure you are clear about your role and performance expectations for your first 30, 60 and
90 days.

 Manage expectations: deliver on commitments.

 Expect there will be some surprises about your role, your business partners and the organization,
and tap into the onboarding process and resources (e.g., Buddy) to help manage those situations.

 Make sure you understand the history/past experiences, reasons why and ownership of anything
that you want to change.

 Manage your time, work prioritize and build a daily routine for doing your work, allowing
flexibility for unexpected demands or changes.

 Give priority to your manager and the team’s priorities.
