The Chinese Table Manners discussed in the article by E Cooper (1986) are an
important part of Chinese culture and have been passed down for generations. In Chinese
society, the way one behaves at the dinner table reflects how one views themselves and
how others view them. Chinese table manners emphasize politeness, respect, and
humility, and demonstrate one's knowledge of proper etiquette. Eating is seen as a social
activity, and the table is a focal point for conversation and interaction. Chinese people
typically sit upright and keep their hands and arms close to their bodies while eating. They
also keep their mouths closed and use chopsticks to eat from the communal platter. It is
important to show respect for the food by not wasting it, as well as by not talking while
eating. To show respect to the host, it is polite to compliment the food and thank them for
their hospitality. Finally, it is important to finish the food on your plate, as leaving food on
your plate is considered to be rude. Through these various aspects of etiquette, Chinese
table manners reflect the importance of politeness and respect in Chinese culture.
