A Level Geography

Local Fieldwork Skills Booklet

Background:

Wimbledon is located in the south west of London, approximately 8 miles from the centre. It is an area that is
well known for being affluent, green and the home to an international tennis tournament each summer.

However, within the wider area of ‘Wimbledon’ there are variations in the physical and built environment and
the quality of life of residents.

Instructions for students:

You will visit overall areas during the afternoon. These are:
1. Wimbledon Village
2. Wimbledon town centre
3. Merton High Street

Within these areas, you need to use the sampling maps to choose three particular sites within the overall area
to visit (remember some might not be suitable). In order to select the three sites, use a random number
generator (there are lots on Google).

At each site you will need to carry out the following data collection techniques:

- Environmental quality survey

- Crime index
- Questionnaires
- Noise survey
- Air quality survey

You are also encouraged to take photographs of what you observe.

Area 1: Wimbledon Village - select your sites on the grid below:

Questions to consider:

How might the results of your survey have differed in the following situations:

1. At the weekend?

2. On a sunny/ cloudy/ rainy day (delete as appropriate depending on the weather on the day)?

3. During the summer holidays?

Did you encounter any problems with your methods?

How could they have been improved?

What were the positives and negatives of your sampling methods?

What sorts of hypotheses and questions could you create based on the fieldwork we have done today?

What secondary data would you collect to support the investigation?
