Destination: The Moon

Have you thought about your next holiday?
Where would you like to go?
When we think about holidays, we probably imagine
going to the beach or the mountains. Or maybe even
a theme park or a summer camp in another country.
These all seem like fun options, but have you ever
thought about somewhere even further away ... I mean
really really far away ... like space? Yes, space! In the
future, your holiday destination could be: the Moon.
After all, it’s only about 400,000 kilometres from Earth.
With the right spacecraft, you’ll be able to get there in
only three days.
But why go to the Moon? Well, there’s a lot to see, like
all of its craters. Your first crater stop could be Tycho.
Did you know that you can see Tycho from Earth? Now
you’ll be able to see it up close! And you mustn’t miss
the first human footprints made by astronaut Neil
Armstrong in 1969.
How long should you stay? One lunar day at least! Don’t
worry – one day on the Moon lasts 30 Earth days. That
should give you enough time to see the sights and get
an idea of life in space.
So how do you prepare for a holiday on the Moon?
The main thing is that you have to learn how to walk
differently. Why? Because there’s less gravity. Push off
your foot very carefully and walk. Lean back when you
want to stop. Then you could even do some sport while
you’re there.
If the Moon isn’t far enough away for you, there’s
always Mercury, Venus, Mars and the other planets.
But of course, these are really far away, like millions
and millions of kilometres. It takes 100 to 200 Earth
days to get to those planets and years to get to Jupiter
and Saturn. And then of course there’s Jupiter’s bad
weather and Saturn’s ice rings to consider ...
But for now, you can dream about the Moon. Could it be
your next holiday destination?

This summer, Matt’s going to teach people

Number 2: Babysitting!
For one month this summer, Sofia is babysitting.
She’ll be taking care of her neighbour’s kids and
the family she’s working for will be taking her
on a two-week trip to Iceland! Have fun, Sofia!
And number 1 is ... Studying!
What!? Yes, studying! Everybody will be
studying this summer.
And what’s so great about that? Well, you’ll
get to see your friends every day, and in a few
years’ time you probably won’t be going to
school anymore, so enjoy school while you
can!

We use the present continuous to talk about plans or
arrangements in the future.
For one month this summer, Sofia is babysitting.
We use be going to to talk about future plans and
intentions.
This summer, Matt’s going to teach.
We use the future continuous to talk about actions that
will (or won’t) be in progress in the future.
Matt predicts that he’ll be taking people on
kayak trips around the world by 2022.

We usually use a time reference with this tense.
The form is: will / won’t be + -ing.
In a few years’ time, you probably won’t be
going to school anymore.

Use it!
Use the pictures and phrases to make statements about
the future.
By 2022, he’ll be leading kayak trips.
Now you try.
Next Saturday, I’m having a party for my birthday.
This time next week, we’ll be flying to New York.

Hey guys.
I’m only a teenager, I’m not someone who can
plan a trip around the world with all kinds of
crazy adventures …
Until now …
The world is full of places I want to go one day:
From Rio in Brazil, …
to the pyramids in Mexico …
to Cappadocia in Turkey.
I can see animals that I can’t see where I live.
I can get close to a polar bear that lives in the
arctic or a lion that lives in Africa.
Aaah …
There are many adventurous things which I
dream of doing.
I can ride a zipline through a forest
ski down a mountain …
play in the waves with a friend …
Or maybe a time in the future when people can
travel to space as tourists.
That’s why these VR goggles are great practice
… for travelling.

Relative pronouns and relative clauses
Let’s talk about the vlog.

information about people, places and things?
We use relative pronouns to give more information
about the subject.
We use different relative pronouns for people, things,
places, time, reasons and possessions.
I’m not someone who can plan a trip around
the world.
I can see animals that I can’t see where I live.
Name a place where the girl went in VR.
Or maybe a time in the future when people
can travel to space.
That’s why these VR goggles are great practice.
It was Dora whose VR trip we just watched.
Use it!
Tell your partner about the pictures. Use the relative
pronouns.
She is a person who likes to ski.

Paris is a place where I’d like to live someday.
Good books are the reason why I stay up late.

One world, one culture?
There are hundreds, if not thousands of different
cultures across the world, and with different cultures
come different ways of life. But is this changing? Are
cultures becoming more and more similar?
Today you can see the same restaurants and shops in
different destinations. Look at Starbucks, which has
over 25,000 shops around the world. You can buy a
‘frappuccino’ anywhere! In the past, when you travelled
abroad, you had to try new food and drink. Sure, it was
uncomfortable sometimes, but you usually had a funny
story afterwards!
Now, people who travel to find something new and
different will have to try harder.

Clothes also used to look very different from country
to country, and you usually knew where someone was
from just from what they wore. But that’s harder to do
now that we buy our clothes from the same places.
As of 2015, H&M is in 62 countries with 4,500 shops.
Nowadays, a teenager in Mexico might wear something
very similar to someone who is in Europe, the USA or
even China.
Are we losing our cultures? Apart from similar food
and shops, is social media also creating a one world
culture? Will we be telling the same stories and jokes as
other people around the world? Will we all be following

the same sports teams? Like the same celebrities? Will
our group of friends be in the same room or will they
be virtual? We can already communicate with friends in
other parts of the world and send messages at any time
of the day. What will be next? Is there a danger in all of
this? Are we going to become so similar that we won’t
have anything new to talk about? Or will we connect
better and more often? Will it bring people together
from around the world? What do you think?
