This Manual 1s for the VISATRON oil Mist Detectors VN 115, VN 116 and VN 215.
1
Since the basic concept of all oil mist detectors is identical, they are described together
in this manual. The differences between the various 011 mist detectors will be "highlighted
where they occur.
1
This Manual describes
- !ault detection and fault elimination for the oil mist detectors
1
- the functional test and maintenance of oil mist detectors
The oil mist detectors continuously extract the crankcase atmosphere, via a pipe system, and
move it past a sensitive and accurate opacity measuring track. In the measuring track, the
·1
opacity of the crankcase atmosphere is measured by means of infrared light.
In the monitoring mode, all three VISATRON types sample the crankcase atmosphere from all
engine compartments simultaneously and feed it directly to the opacity measuring track for
1
monitoring. The shortest possible response time after a rise in the concentration of the
crankcase atmosphere is thus ensured.
The oil mist detectors, mounted directly on the ~ngine, in order to keep th~ intake lines as
1
short as possible to ensure minimum delay, consist of:
- a base plate with air blast pump to generate the vacuum required to evacuate the crankcase
atmosphere, the built-in heating unit and a compact plug for electrical connection of the
1
oil mist detectors
VN215:
valve box to connect 2 manifolds
I VN215: individual tubes, directly connecting each compartment with the oil. mist detector,
supply the crankcase atmosphere to the oil mist detector. At the same time, the
atmosphere is monitored for overrun of a predefined threshold value.

I In the following, the function is ,explained on the basis of the block diagrams for oil mist
detectors VN 115, VN 116 and VN 215 (see· annex):
I Via the crankcase connection unit (VN 115) or valve box (VN 116 or VN 215), which are
different for every VISATRON type, the crankcase atmosphere is supplied to a separator in
the base plate, where large oil particles are separated off with the aid of the centrifugal
force. The oil separated off in the crankcase connection unit/valve box and in the separator
I is directly ducted off, via the oil drain ducts, to the air draft pump in the base plate and
thus out of the unit, s~ that it is not supplied to the opacity measuring track at all.
From the separator, the sampled crankcase atmosphere is fed to the optical measuring track
I in the measuring unit. In order to avoid soiling of the infrared filters by the crankcase
atmosphere, a certain amount of fresh air is continUOUSly drawn in from the vicinity of the
measuring unit via one air filter in each of the two so-called scavenging air chambers. This
fresh air prevents the crankcase atmosphere from entering into contact with the infrared
I filters.
Additionally, the fact that the fresh air chambers are physically arranged between the
infrared filters and the flowing crankcase atmosphere prevents any oil droplets that may be
Despite these measures the soiling of the infrared· filters is still possible. The mea~uring
track interprets this as an increase in opacity. The same effect on the measuring track is
I caused by the ageing and the possible temperature drift of the electronic components.
These changes are very slow to come about compared to the opacity rise in case of engine
fault. Consequently, their influence can be eliminated by adjusting the opacity reference
I point to take account of ageing, soiling etc., instead of keeping it constant as usual.
The adjustment of the reference value for opacity measuring is made so slowly that the sharp
rise 1n opacity in case of a fault is not overstepped.
I In order to keep the oil mist detector ready for operation immediately after application of
the supply voltage, a reference value, in which all-the above-mentioned ,influences on the
measuring track are instantly taken account of, is computed immediately after application of
I the operating voltage. This ensures that any basic opacity existing in the engine at the
time the oil mist detector is activated is also reflected in the reference value.
Adjustment for the influences effected on the optical measuring track due to soiling and
I ageing can only be made to a certain point. If adjustment equals 70% opacity, the oil mist
detector will signal an equipment fault.
The entry of fresh air into the scavenging air chambers is additionally used to verify
I wether a certain minimum vacuum required for the proper working of the oil mist detector
exists in the measuring chamber.
In order to monitor the vacuum in the measuring chamber, a Ptl00 measuring sensor is fitted
I downstream of each of the two air filters; one sensor measures the flow rate, the other
sensor measures the ambient temperature, to allow the necessary temperature compensation to
be made.
I After passing the optical measuring track, the crankcase atmosphere is fed to the air draft
pump. The air leaving the air draft pump contains the crankcase atmosphere and leak oil from
the separator and the crankcase connection unit and is fed to the bilge or the leak oil
channel of the engine.
I
Page 3
I
I
The optical measuring track includes an infrared light emitting diode generating a certain
lighting intensity at the photodiode sensitive to infrared light. The pbotodiode converts
I
,the lighting intensity into an electrical signal which is fed to the electronic evaluation
unit.
If the crankcase atmosphere contains oil mist, part of the infrared light is absorbed in the
I
measuring track. As a result, the electrical signal is weakened. A higher opacity of the
crankcase atmosphere will produce a lower electrical signal.
This electrical signal is monitored 1n the electronic evaluation unit for falling short of a
I
minimum threshold value. This means for the opacity of the crankcase atmosphere that it is
monitored for exceeding a maximum threshold value.
The factory-set threshold value can be adjusted on the electronics unit at the installation
I
location by means of'a screwdriver (only if absolutely necessary). (The engine manufacturer
must be consulted before this modification is made.)
The overrun of the threshold value for the opacity of the crankcase atmosphere causes
I
different actions in the various VISATRON types, so the corresponding values are different
as well.
During the search run, groups of compartments are always measured in relation to
each other. If the opacity difference overruns a certain level, an oil mist alarm
I
is actuated immediately. This ensures great sensitivity in detecting faults without
affecting the resistance to false alarms.
In addit~on, an oil mist alarm is actuated when opacity has reached a certain level
I
in relation to the beginning of the search run.
Upon completion of the sear9h run, the fault location is indicated in the valve box
and remains in the store.
I
In the event of an oil mist alarm, the oil mist alarm relay picks up and the red alarm lamp
in the window blinks. I
The oil mist alarm relay has two potential-free change-over contacts. One of them can be
connected to the alarm system, the other one to the safety system aboard the ship.
An oil mist alarm, when occurred, remains stored and can only be reset by pressing the reset
I
key.
A green ready lamp indicates that the oil mist detector is in perfect working condition. At
the same time, the ready relay is energized.
I
If the proper functioning of the oil mist detector is no longer assured, a comprehensive
monitoring logic ensures that the ready lamp goes out and the ready relay drops off. An oil
mist alarm is no longer transmitted, i.e. the oil mist relay fails to pick up and the red
I
alarm lamp remains extinguished.
I
3. Operation of the Oil Mist Detectors I
In normal operation, no manual/interference is necessary, provided the oil mist detector is
connected and worki~g in a proper manner. Manual interference will'only become necessary, if
I
I
In the following, the functional components of the oil mist detector, such as indicating
I LEns, pushbuttons and relay contacts, are described. To the extent that differences exist
between the various VISATRON types they will be highlighted.
I 3.1 Indicating Devices in the View Window of the Oil· Mist Detector
The opacity indicating device consists of an LED-array with 14 red LEns. When the supply
voltage is sufficient one of the LED lights in a steady or blinking mode.
A steady light in the LED-array indicates the percentage change of opacity, i.e. the
amount by Which the oil mist opacity is below the reference value, beginning with the
only one LED in the LED-array lights at a time. However, in the event the opacity is
between the respective opacity levels of two adjacent LEDS, flickering between these two
If opacity reaches levels beyond the indicating range, the topmost LED of the LED-array
will light.
I The type of fault detected is indicated by the blinking of an LED in the LED-array. Each
individual LED has fault causes assigned to it. These are explained in ~he following and
indicated on the data plate as headwords.
I For technical reasons, only one fault can be indicated in the LED-array at a time. After
the indicated fault has been eliminated, the next faUlt, if any, is indicated.
After all faults of the oil mist detector have been eliminated, the LED-array
I automatically displays opacity again. This is noticeable, on the one hand, by the
switchover of the LED-array from blinking to steady light and, on the other hand, by the
lighting of the green READY-LED. An exception are the fault indications from the alarm
level and mode switch. After the elimination of the faUlt, these fault indications can
I only be reset after disconnecting and reconnecting the supply voltage, as the switch
positions can only be read in immediately after application of the supply voltage.
If the oil mist detector is no longer ready for operation, which condition is indicated by
I green READY-LED off, any oil mist alarm that may come in is not transmitted, i.e. the two
oil mist alarm relays are not energized and and the red ALARM-LED remains extinguished.
Merely the red TEST-LED will light continuously in the event of an oil mist alarm.

I - OIL MIST ALARM
I
This "red alarm LED flashes if the oil mist has exceeded the alarm threshold while the
oil mist detector is working normally (green READY-LED. on)..
The oil mist"alarm is stored, i.e. the alarm status in the oil mist detector is
I
maintained even after the opacity of the oil mist has fallen below the alarm threshold.
The alarm status is reset only when the RESET-key is pressed.
Should the alarm situation persist after the RESET-key has been depressed, the alarm
I
status will in fact be immediately reset, however restored 3 seconds "after the key has
been released. While the OIL-MIST-ALARM-LED blinks, the two OIL-MIST-ALARM-RELAYS are
energized and the contacts between PIN 7/8 and PIN 15/16 are closed.
I
As soon as the OIL-MIST-ALARM-LED is extinguished, the contacts are opened again.
I
- TEST (test alarm)
The test alarm indication serves to check the alarm transmission by the VISATRON unit
while avoiding the pick-up of the relays for oil mist alarm and thus any undesired
I
reduction or stoppage of the machine.
~n addition, the red TEST-LED lights in the event the oil mist detector, while not
working ,properly, detects an oil mist alarm.
I In order to be able to check the alarm transmission of the oil mist detector by means of
the TEST-LED, the VISATRON oil Mist Detector must first be disabled by opening the cap
of the measuring unit. The green READY-LED ceases to light and the LED-array and the
I
LED-array shows by the flashing of LED 14 that the flow rate in the scavenging air duct
is insufficient. If the measuring track is darkened (by a filter glass or another
object) and the alarm theshold exceeded in doing so, the TEST-LED will light. As in the
case of an oil mist alarm the test alarm remains stored and can be reset by pressing the
I
RESET-KEY. Should the alarm situation persist when the RESET-KEY is pressed, the TEST-
LED will in fact cease to iight immediately, however it will come back 3 seconds after
the key has been released.
I
If it is desired to watch the opacity change in the measuring track during the test, the
RESET-KEY must be pressed prior to acting on the measuring track in order to switch over
to opacity indication in the LED-array.
The oil mist detector is only ready for operation when the green READY-LED lights. When
I
the green READY-LED is extinguished, no monitoring of the crankcase is possible.
A fault indication in the for~,of a blinking LED in the LED-array indicates the reason
why the oil mist detector is no longer in working order. Remedies to eliminate the fault
I
are provided in chapter "Fault Detection and Elimination in the Oil Mist Detectors l l •
After the f~ult has been eliminated, the green READY-LED automatically comes on again.
Any active- test alarm is thereby automatically cancelled.
The light red indication symbols in the valve box indicate the position of the valves. A
I
visible light red symbol indicates an opened valv~. If a window is dark, the associated
valve is closed.
After the oil mist alarm, the light red symbols indicate the exhaust tube(s), for which
I
the highest opacity of the oil mist was detected, i.e. the engine location where the
fault was detected. This position is maintained until the RESET-key is depressed and the
opacity of the oil mist has fallen below the alarm threshold. If the RESET-KEY is
pressed during the search run, the search run is aborted and all valves are opened. The
I searc~ run resumes after the RESET-KEY has been released, provided the measured opacity
level is still· abOve the seareh run start threshold.
When the READY-LED goes out (faUlt in the oil mist detector) this remains without effect
I
on the search run, to the extent that the latter is still- operational.

3.2. CONTROLS OF THE OIL MIST DETECTOR
RESET-KEY I
This key serves to:
An active OIL MIST ALARM or TEST ALARM Is reset by pressing the RESET-KEY, 1.e. the ALARM
LED goes out and the alarm relay drops off again.
I
After the RESET-KEY has been released, opacity is measured 8gain. If"opacity is above the
alarm threshold, an alarm is sounded again after lapse of 3 seconds. Only after the
opacity of the oil mist has fallen below the alarm threshold, the alarm situation can be
I
cancelled by actuating the RESET-KEY. Thus it may be
necessary to press the key several
times until the end of the alarm situation.
To allow a check of the RESET-KEY for proper functioning, the LED-array lights momentarily
I
each time the key is pressed.
While the RESET-KEY is pressed, the lowest LED in the LED-array lights. Opacity in fact is
still measured by the unit, but the respective signals are not transmitted to· the display.
I
If the RESET-KEY has not been released after approx. 10 seconds, the green READY-LED will
go out and a fault indication appears in the form of a blinking LED 7.
The pressing of the RESET-KEY will only effect the resetting of the oil mist alarm store,
I
but not the resetting (and the resulting readjustment of the unit) of the electronic
system, as for example after power up.
If there is a malfunction of the oil mist detector. the green READY-light goes out and the
I
nature of the fault is indicated by a flashing LED-array. The opacity indication in the
form of a steady light is switched over by pressing the RESET-KEY. By pressing the RESET-
KEY again, the blinking fault indication resumes etc. I
This switchover is only possible if neither OIL MIST ALARM nor TEST ALARM have been
actuated. If an alarm has been actuated, the alarm is reset by pressing the RESET KEY. A
switchover of the indication can only be made, if no alarm is indicated. If the alarm
situation persists after pressing and releasing the key, a switchover in the indication at
I
the LED-array is nevertheless possible, as at least 3 seconds will pass until a new oil
mist alarm is signalled.
VN 116/
I
VN 215: An active search run is interrupted by pressing the RESET-KEY. The search
run is set to neutral state (all valves open). This state is maintained
until the RESET-KEY is released again. I
ADJUSTING THE OIL MIST ALARM
The oil mist unit is supplied with a setting of the alarm threshold that, according to our
practical experience, provides the required sensitivity to detect a damage While avoiding
I
false alarms. Should this setting be inadequate in extreme situations, the oil mist alarm
threshold can be adjusted via a step switch 51.
The step switch, with positions 1 to 10, is located on the front panel of the oil mist
I
unit.-'Position 1 is the lowest alarm threshold (maximum sensitivity), position 10 is the
highest alarm threshold.
The unit is supplied with the switch in position 4. For sensitivity data please refer to
I
I
the data sheet.
Since this setting needs to and should be adjusted only in rare cases, if at all, the
electronics board must be withdrawn to modify the setting. Then the turn switch can be
by means of a small screwdriver. Since the switch pOsition can only be read in
I
manipulated
imJIediately after the application of the supply voltage, the new switch position takes
effect only after the supply voltage has been disconnected and reconnected again.

1 A maximum of 10 suction tubes Can be connected to. the VN 215., However, a smaller number of
extraction tubes can be connected, the minlmum'being 4 tubes (see installation manual).
The tube ports that are not used must be- obturated.
1 In the event the opacity exceeds the so-called search run threshold during operation, a
so-called search function is initiated by the VN 215, in which the valves in the valve box
are scanned in a specific procedure, .. in order· to. find out as quickly as possible which
1 tube supplies the unit with the oil mist of highest opacity.
The VN 215 is supplied with a search . fu~c~ion for ten connected tubes. This search
function is adjusted in such a manner. as .to work properly down to four connected tuoes • As
1 a result, this setting can be maintained for any number of connected tubes.
If less than 10 tubes are connected. the search function selects suction locations that
are obturated, which procedure causes a loss of time.
1 To shorten the search. operation there is a possibility of telling the, aee rcb. function. the
number of connected tubes via a step switch (mode switchl, so that only those suction
tubes are selected during the search operation that are actually connected.

I
If· the lubrication oil in. the crankcase contains se te r , ~ater .vepor is extracted together
with the crankcase atmosphere~ This vapor -can co~dense under certain temperature conditions
in 'the oil"mist' detector. This condensed water'vapor influences the measuring track in the
I
oil m~st detector in',the same manner as' the'~il mist. This may result in false alarms.
In.order to avoid false alarms as a . result of condensing water vapor, a heating unit
installed in' the oil 'mist detector ensures that the crankcase atmosphere is heated,
I
immediately before it reaches the measuring track, to such a point that the dewpoint of the
I
water' is exceeded and no condensation of the water vapor can take place.
This heating unit is installed in,the base' plate of the oil mist, detector. It is connected
to the 24V power supply in :the connection plug.
The'driving air pressu~e for the .air draft pump (see illustration) must be adjusted in such
a manner .as to generate a vacuum of 60, to 80 mm max. W.C. in the measuring track of the oil
mist.detector. This vacu~m can be measured by connection of a U-tube pressure gauge
I
(contained in the service box) at th~ screw ~nion provided for this purpose at the ~easuring
cover •
.An ini~ial adjustment of the suction pressure by regulating the driving air pressure must be
I
made while the engine is not running, but with the ventilation system for tbe machine
.compartment fully active. An inc~ease or decrease in tbe-crankcase pressure during operation
and the resulting effect on the flow velocity of the oil .ist in the intake tubes is iargely
comPensated by the throttle track installed in the' unit. (+2~ mm.W.C. in the crankcase
I
against atmosphere will result in a rise in·the flow velocity of the oil .mist,in the suction
I
tubes of approx. 8%, 50 mm W.C. will, result in a rise of approx. 14%, which can be ignored).
This is important-, beeeuse ~ high flow velocity causes an increase of oil mist, and the
sensitivity of the ~it is ·reduced.
The classification requirement -of BV, aocording to 'which in case of a defective pressure
