READING AND TEACHING STRUCTURE

This fall, we are meeting every other week to gather together for large group teaching and
small group discussion. These bi-weekly gatherings are a rich, meaningful time where you
meet with the same group of women each time to talk about what God is teaching you as a
result of your time in the Word. Please make these Tuesday gatherings a priority as you are
there for other women as much as you are there for yourself!

Our homework each week will consist of reading one chapter from Jen Wilkin's book, In His
Image and studying 3-4 scripture passages that are related to that week's attribute. In this
study guide, you have the passages printed out, as well as study pages and additional notes
pages to use during your reading and/or the large group teaching time.

Below is a schedule of our large group teaching topics. Each large group teaching time will be
structured around the concepts discussed in In His Image. Reading the book is strongly
encouraged but will not be a requirement in order to participate. This is first and foremost a
Bible study, not a book study, so please use the book as a resource and not as your primary
study material. If you only do one thing, we ask that you study God's Word.

Prior to coming to each week's gathering, please complete the homework that is related to
the topic. For instance, before Session 2, you will have read chapters 1 and 2 in In His Image
as well as the scripture readings for those weeks.

HOW TO USE THIS STUDY GUIDE
Our hope is that this study guide helps to equip women to study the Word on their own. While
it's tempting to go to a passage solely for the immediate application, we must come to God's
Word prayerfully and with intentionality. So before we come to God's Word, we pray, asking
for the Holy Spirit to illuminate our hearts as we study.

BUILD THE FRAMEWORK What is the context?

Before getting into the text, look into the background of the text. Using a trusted resource,
such as the ESV Study Bible, answer the 5W's:

• Who wrote it?

• When was it written?
• What was the culture and setting like at the time?
• To whom was it written?
• Why did they write it?

OBSERVATION What does this say?

Read the text at least once all the way through for comprehension. Because many of the read-
ings are from longer passages, read the entire chapter to gain context.

Read it again, this time working through the text slowly and intentionally. Here are some things
you can underline, circle, or highlight:

Key words Time, locations and people

Lists (make a note when the author makes sever- Transition words (but, therefore, because, like-
al points in a row) wise, if/then)
Repeated words, ideas and phrases Contrasts and comparisons

As you work through the text, note any questions you have about the meaning of certain
words, or of the text in general. You can also mark major themes in the text.

Gospel truths New self/identity

Great Commission Great Commandment

The Church Redemptive promises

• Use an online resource like blueletterbible.com if there are words you don't know the
meaning to. But also look up the keywords in the text even if you think you know what they
mean. Note the appropriate meaning for the passage and any related words.

6
• Consult different translations for clarity and deeper understanding. Many Bible websites
will allow for a parallel view to compare to other translations. You can also look up related
scripture, also known as cross-references.

INTERPRETATION What does this mean?

Ask yourself: What is this text trying to do? What would the original hearers have thought?
It's important to see the scripture in its original context before considering what this passage
means to you today.

• Challenge yourself to evaluate how this passage fits within the greater theme of the Bible:
Creation-Fall-Redemption-Restoration.
• Paraphrase and summarize: Rewrite the text in your own phrasing. This can be challenging,
but it is worth the effort!
• Only after working through your own research in scripture, consult reliable commentaries
and resources. We recommend the ESV Study Bible as one resource. After you understand
what the passage is about, move to Application. (If you still have questions, make note of
them. Feel free to come back to them later in the day or week! Keep reading, talk to your
community, ask the Lord for clarity.)

APPLICATION How does this change me?

Answer some of these questions:

What does this passage tell you about you, your

change how you view yourself?

What might these truths look like in action? Is the

Remember that all actions begin as thoughts and

desires of the heart. How do these truths trans-
circumstances, conversations or sins to mind for

your prayer, repentance and reconciliation?

How will this change the way you respond to God Are there practical things God is leading you to do
and others? differently as your heart changes?

• It is also helpful to pray over the application points, sometimes in the form of a “God/I”
statement. What does this passage teach you about God and, in turn, about yourself? For
example, “God, because you are sovereign, I don’t have to worry about tomorrow. Help me
to see that you are in control.”
• Allow prayer to be one of the first steps in allowing the truths of scripture to transform
you.
• Share what you have learned with others! This helps as you begin to apply the truths of
scripture in everyday life.

HOLY
Isaiah 6:1-7 ESV
1
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and

the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings:

with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one

called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory!”
4
And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house

was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips,

and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD

of hosts!”
6
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken

with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your

lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV

14
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but

as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,16 since it is written, “You shall

be holy, for I am holy.”

Matthew 5:43-48 ESV

43
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I

say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons

of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and

sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do

you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,

what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore

must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Hebrews 12:14 ESV

14
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

LOVING
Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
17
The LORD your God is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save;

he will rejoice over you with gladness;

he will quiet you by his love;

he will exult over you with loud singing.

1 John 4:7-12 ESV

7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of

God and knows God. ⁸ Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

⁹ In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the

world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that

he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us,

we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God

abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

SESSION 2
SCRIPTURE FOR THIS SESSION

Romans 5:6-11 ESV

6
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will

scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even

to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by

him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the

death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More

than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now

received reconciliation.

GOOD
TITUS 3:3-7 ESV

3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and

pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. ⁴ But

when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not because

of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regen-

eration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ
our Savior, ⁷ so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope

of eternal life.

Psalm 25:8-10 ESV

⁸ Good and upright is the LORD;

therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

⁹ He leads the humble in what is right,

and teaches the humble his way.

10
All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,

for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Galatians 6:8-10 ESV

8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who

sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing

good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let

us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. 19 Love the sojourner,

therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Psalm 9:7-10 ESV

7
But the LORD sits enthroned forever;

he has established his throne for justice,

through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw

near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil

conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our

hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Numbers 23:19 ESV

19
God is not man, that he should lie,

or a son of man, that he should change his mind.

Has he said, and will he not do it?

Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

PATIENT
Colossians 3:12-15 ESV
12
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness,

humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint

against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

SCRIPTURE FOR THIS SESSION

14
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.

And be thankful.

Psalm 86:15 ESV

15
But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Psalm 37:7 ESV

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;

fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,

over the man who carries out evil devices!

John 7:1-8 ESV

1
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews

were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said

to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are do-

ing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show

yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My

time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates

me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going

up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”

SCRIPTURE FOR THIS SESSION

TRUTHFUL
John 1:14-18 ESV
14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the

only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried

out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was

before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was

given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen

God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

John 8:31-32 ESV

31
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my

disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

1 Peter 1:22-25 ESV

22
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love

one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable

seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

“All flesh is like grass

and all its glory like the flower of grass.

The grass withers,

and the flower falls,

25
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

SESSION 6
SCRIPTURE FOR THIS SESSION

WISE
Colossians 3:16-17 ESV
16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all

wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to

God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,

giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Corinthians 1:20-25 ESV

20
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has

not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world

did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to

save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach

Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are

called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the

foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Romans 11:33-36 ESV

33
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his

judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34
“For who has known the mind of the Lord,

or who has been his counselor?”

35
“Or who has given a gift to him

that he might be repaid?”

36
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
