Use the strategies described above to identify a starting point for your learning. It may also be

useful to reflect on these questions:

 When I read the practice standard, do I need more education on certain concepts or

topics?

When I read the practice standard, I believe I need more education on standard 2.1

that talks about undertaking in ongoing education on Indigenous health care. I am not

aware of many resources other than taking classes at a college that support the educating

of people on this topic. While I am aware that a lot of this education would be occurring

while I am working during clinicals, etc., that is not enough. Specialized teaching with

people who are qualified to do so is necessary for people who work with marginalized

communities, especially one with so much generational trauma.

 Have I received feedback that identified a learning opportunity about cultural safety,

cultural humility, or anti-racism?

During clinical rotations in first year, I had to work with a residential school

survivor at Dunrovin. He was a knew client at the Lodge. He was quite hostile towards

the care aids during the first couple days of being there. I was warned about potential

trigger topics, such his past, family, etc. We were told to read his file and care plan before

we went into his room. This experience lead me to do more research on residential

schools and the effects on the survivors. I dug into more first hand accounts and even

ended up reading the book Fatty Legs by Margaret Pokiak-Fenton and Christy Jordan-

Fenton. I learned quite a bit about the horrendous acts that were inflicted upon the

children.
 How do I approach my learning with humility and self-awareness?

I approach my learning with humility and self-awareness by being receptive and

open minded towards ay information I am receiving. I make sure to understand all I can

about what I am learning and to clarify any discrepancies I might have. I do my own

research on topics I learn from other sources as well. For example, I spent time learning

more about he Oka Crisis and what led up to it after we learned about it in class.

 Where would I find the resources to help support me in my learning journey?

I could find the resources to help support my learning journey from a multitude of

places. The most obvious place would be the internet as I have access to it at all times of

the day. I could go to the local library and check on services through the community

centres. I could ask my professors and other professionals at my school.
