GOOD LABORATORY

PRACTICES (GLP)
GOLDEN RULE in the
LABORATORY
“The first and foremost concern in the
laboratory is the promotion of your
SAFETY, WELFARE AND
WELL - BEING.”
What is a Science Laboratory?
• It is a room designed for experimental
work where students can validate the
application of scientific concepts.
Good Laboratory Practices

– Sets of carefully validated and approved

procedure that is implemented to assure
quality and reliable results as well as
SAFETY in the Laboratory.
General Laboratory Rules
• No open toed shoes or flip-flops.
General Laboratory Rules
• No shorts or loose fitting clothes.
General Laboratory Rules
• Use clips and hair nets to keep your hair in
place.
General Laboratory Rules
• Remove rings, watches and jewelries
before performing an experiment.

Sheet
(MSDS)
General Laboratory Rules
• Wear personal protective equipment, as
appropriate.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
• Wear lab gowns or lab coats whenever
performing an experiment.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
• Wear eye
protective goggles

• Do not wear
contact lenses
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
• Prescription glasses do not count as
safety goggles.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
• Wear the right kind of gloves when
handling corrosive reagents like acids as
well as hot containers.
General Laboratory Rules
• Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco products in
the laboratory.
General Laboratory Rules
• Never work alone in the laboratory.
General Laboratory Rules
• Keep lab doors closed; however, there are
instances wherein experimental work
produce too much fumes which may require
opening of the lab doors.
General Laboratory Rules
• Hallways, corridors, and exit ways must be kept
clear. Do not locate (even temporarily)
laboratory equipment or supplies in these
areas.
Safety Laboratory Techniques
• Allow proper storage space for flammable and waste
materials.

• Provide sufficient shelves or cabinets. Do not store

chemicals, apparatus or equipment on the floor.
Safety Laboratory Techniques
• Use only equipment that is free from flaws such as
cracks, chips, and obvious defects.
Safety Laboratory Techniques
• Whenever applicable, lubricate before using
glass stopcocks in burettes and separatory
funnels.
Safety Laboratory Techniques
• Use a hood when conducting a reaction that
could result in an explosion. Close the hood
sash to provide a shield.
GENERAL HAZARD
SYMBOLS
(Know about the chemicals and its hazards)
Safety with Symbols

Corrosive:
These substances destroy living tissue and
equipment upon contact.

Caution! Do not breathe vapors; avoid contact with

skin and eyes.

Ex. HCl, sodium hypochlorite,

sodium hydroxide
Safety with Symbols
Oxidizer:

Oxidizing substances can ignite flammable

and combustible material

Caution!

Keep away from flammable, combustible

and spontaneously combustible materials.

Ex.hydrogen peroxide, calcium hypochlorite,

ammonium nitrate
Safety with Symbols
Poisonous Substances:
Very hazardous to health when inhaled, swallowed
or when they come in contact with the skin. May even
lead to death.

Danger!

Avoid contact with the human body and

immediately contact a physician in case of contact.

Ex. Cyanides, arsenic substances

Safety with Symbols
• Flammable: Designates those items which are:

a. Flammable Liquids - Caution! Flash point below 141°F

(60.5°C).

b. Flammable Solids - Caution! Keep away from open fires,

sources of heat and sparks.

c. Combustible Material - Caution! Flash point greater

than 141°F but less than 200°F (or greater than 60.5°C
but less than 90°C).
• Keep away from open flames, sources of heat and sparks.
Safety with Symbols

Keep Away From Food:

Store away from foodstuffs. Toxic or poisonous

materials which are hazardous to health when
inhaled, swallowed or when they come in contact with
the skin.

Danger!

Avoid contact with the human body and immediately

consult a physician in case of contact.
Safety with Symbols

Radioactive: This symbol designates those

substances which have measurable
radioactivity. Caution! Avoid exposure.
Safety with Symbols

HARMFUL if swallowed.

Irritating (i) to skin. Limited evidence of a

carcinogenic effect. Harmful (n): danger of serious
damage to health by prolonged exposure through
inhalation and if swallowed.
Safety with Symbols

Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause

long-term adverse effects in the aquatic
environment.
Safety with Symbols

Explosives are considered all products and

preparations, if they explode through ignition or if
they are more sensitive than dinitrobenzene
towards blows and friction
Precaution: Avoid impact, knocks, frictions,
sparks, heat, and fire.
Proper Storage of Chemicals
To prevent this:
Proper Storage of Chemicals
Or This:
Safe Storage of Chemicals
GENERAL RULES
• Dangerous goods must be stored under special safety
condition to avoid health on environmental disaster.
• It doesn’t matter how many
• Separate the incompatible materials
• If the substance has several hazard degrees, its should be
classified as per its highest one:

EXPLOSIVE>OXIDIZING>FLAMMABLE>TOXIC
>CORROSIVE>HARMFUL
