QUEEN

Freddie Mercury was born on 5th September 1946 on the island of

Zanzibar, near Tanzania, in Africa. His real name was Faroukh
Bulsara. His parents were Indian, from the city of Bombay. His father
worked for the British government.

Because of his father’s job, his family travelled a lot. So when he was
eight, Faroukh went to an English boarding school, near Bombay.
There his friends began to call him Freddie. He hated sport but he
liked school and music.

When Freddie was 17 years old, he went to England to study Art. He

became friends with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
They all loved music, but they knew they probably couldn’t live on it.
Then they decided to buy a stall at Kensington Market in London and
sell old clothes.

In 1970, Freddie, Brian and Roger decided to form a new group.. They
found a bass player an in April 1970, they had their first small concert,
and Queen was born.

At the beginning they weren’t making enough money to live on so

they decided to finish their studies. May became an astronomer,
Taylor a biologist and Freddie became a graphic designer.

They were the first group to do giant concerts in stadiums. They were
the stars of the Live Aid concert for Ethiopia, in London’s Wembley
Stadium in 1985. They were also the first group to make short films
every time they make a new song- music videos. They did many
charity events and their records are still making money, even today.

For some years, there were rumours that Freddie was ill with AIDs.
He denied them. Finally, the day before he died, he called a press
conference to say he had AIDs. He died on November 24th, 1991.
