Family
A family is a group of people that are either intimately related, live under the same
roof and support each other.
Some ways a family can begin:
 Arranged marriage-Parents choose a spouse for their child.
 Shot-gun marriage-Forced to marry because of the occurrence of a pregnancy.
 Marriage of convenience-Marries for either wealth/Status/ETC.
 Family tradition-When a spouse dies the surviving partner marries to the most
eligible family of the deceased.
 Elopement-When two people form a legal union.

The basic functions of a family
 A unit of procreation- Human procreation allows for a society to continue
since without it a society will eventually die out.
 An economic unit for satisfying basic need-To supply the needs to the
family.

 A unit of socialization-To make the child learn the kind of behavior that is
expected of the child and through this they will learn what is seen as
acceptable or unacceptable behavior in society.
 A unit caring and supportive social unit-The family should give a sense of
belonging. When the parents show interest in the child, they are encouraged to
achieve more.
Family Planning
This is the practice of controlling the number of children a family has and the
intervals between births by use of contraceptives.

 Oral contraceptives (Birth control pill)
 Intrauterine device (IUD)

A general strategy is to prevent the circumstances from happening in the first place.
The impact of social issues on family life.
The impacts can vary and include extra financial burdens and negative effects on
health and children being deprived of proper parenting.
Culture
This is the ideals, customs and social behavior of a particular people or society/ The
way of life of individuals.
Cultural Diversity
This is the existence of a variety of ethnic groups within a society.
Cultural Penetration
This is where one culture absorbs aspects of another culture. Eg. Us eating fast
foods such as Wendy’s/ Halloween in Trinidad.
Cultural Erasure
This is the gradual removal of a custom from society. Eg. The practice of using
donkeys for transport.
Cultural Retention
This is the act of Retaining the culture of a specific group of people.

This is the process or cycle of introducing a new product method into the market.
Cultural assimilation
The process by which a person's language/culture starts to resemble those of
another group.
