HOW TO IMPROVE THE CURRENT

EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM:
A PROPOSAL
INTRODUCTION
The aim of this proposal is to improve some issues that are happening in our high school. We
feel like it is important to make some changes if we want to look after student’s mental health,
and also, for a better future for us with new opportunities. Because of that, we propose some
recommendations and improvements that we consider we must achieve, since they are extremely
necessary for our purpose.

CURRENT SITUATION

In our High School, many students complain about the

current educational system. They feel unmotivated,
pressured and in a constant state of stress, which causes
them to feel unhappy and trapped in their classrooms and,
even sometimes, makes them want to quit studying.

Above all the areas that need improvement, we chose some aspects that
ISSUES we consider approachable to achieve and need to be highlighted:
Student’s motivation: nowadays less students are interested in studying and they feel
forced to come to high school. This creates an atmosphere of indifference between the
students and their teacher, who also starts to lose interest.

Student counseling: when students enter the last courses of high school, they usually
feel pressured to choose a job or career for their future, and without any guidance or
anyone to help or give advice to them, it can make them feel lost. The main problem is
that students do not know what to do once they are outside high school.

Discipline: discipline is essential for students to work in their classroom. Without

discipline students can not concentrate or improve their skills. Also, students can not
work in groups if there are no rules, respect and a values system to guide each student.
Out of school activities and clubs: club’s activities are important for improving
the lives of students; it can, for instance, increase social skills and create
once-in-a-lifetime experiences, which can also be helpful by motivating
students to study and learn new things. It is more likely for students to learn
something if they are having fun and relaxed in the lesson. Also, the aussences
of different activities like music or arts stopped the learning process of
students because we only have the option of the classic subjects during the
obligatory period: sciences, math, history, english and spanish language.

It is notorious that our high school needs to take action to solve these
RECOMMENDATIONS educational issues that are happening in the current days. This are a
few solutions to some aspects that were mentioned before:
It would be advantageous to give the students classes about what they really like, so a possible
solution could be adding more options to study other subjects. However, what is more notable
is that the method used for teaching must be changed for another that supports students and
what they are interested in. In addition, teachers are a relevant point in this measure because
with the increase of options, the schools may need more teachers, so less people would be
unemployed.

The first and more obvious solution would be to hire a students council if there is not one
already. If the school’s budget can not afford it, we propose tutors should have that role and
help each student to be more certain of their future by explaining how university works or the
different careers they offer. Also, taking time to analyze each student and his or her skills would
be useful to know what they are actually good at and which jobs will help them exploit those
qualities. Even if that is mostly the students task, we consider it to be extremely hard without
any guidance. You cannot be sure of what you are looking for if you do not know what options
are available.

It is advisable to make clear from the beginning what everyone’s role is. Besides, we think it is
necessary to establish some rules in classrooms, since it would help to teach students to
respect their teacher and partners. A healthy environment of respect might be helpful to the
attention of the students as well, so we encourage a system where teachers are strict, but they
still listen to what students have to say. Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that values like
discipline and respect must be taught at home first.

One possible solution would be to organizate more school trips, for example,
students could go to Rome to study history or even go to London to improve
the English's level of the students. However, it is not necessary to travel out
of Spain to adquiere more knowledge, students can learn things even on a
beach near school. Due to the problem of the absence of different lessons
and skills, we suggest that we should plan mini-activities that develop
different areas of knowledge like composer skills, laboratory projects,
cooking abilities, economical concepts that might be useful for the future,
mental health based lessons… We believe that if you only learn by books
and power points, students are more likely to forget all the information, so
we propose to internalize the information by a different type of memory or a
more fun and productive experience.

CONCLUSION
A healthier and respectful environment, along with happier students who can study
what they want in the best way possible, is the key for student’s success and a good
high school policy. In the end, high school is the last step before students reach adult
life, and a good education means a proper and prepared person for the future and life.
