About the BASCTM–3 Behavioral and
Emotional Screening System
(BASC–3 BESS)

1 Brief Description
A brief, universal screening system for measuring behavioral and emotional strengths
and weaknesses in children and adolescents.

Assessing the behavioral and emotional functioning of children and adolescents can
be an effective tool in promoting student success. Academic problems, along with
problems associated with developing and maintaining positive relationships with others,
can be the result of underlying behavioral and emotional deficits that, when caught
early, can be corrected before negatively affecting a child or adolescent.

The BASC–3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System offers a reliable, quick, and
systematic way to determine behavioral and emotional strengths and weaknesses
of children and adolescents in preschool through high school. This screening system
consists of brief forms that can be completed by teachers, parents, or students,
providing one of the most comprehensive and efficient tools available today.

Features and Benefits

The BASC–3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System offers a number of valuable
features:

1. Assessment of a wide array of behaviors that represent both behavioral problems

and strengths, including internalizing problems, externalizing problems, school
problems, and adaptive skills.

2. Forms that can be completed in approximately five minutes or less, without the
need for specialized training.

3. Spanish-language versions of the Parent and Student Forms.

4. An overall score (i.e., the Behavioral and Emotional Risk Index), as well as subindexes
that provide a more targeted view of behavioral and emotional functioning (i.e.,
on the Teacher and Parent Forms: Externalizing Risk Index, Internalizing Risk Index,
and Adaptive Skills Risk Index; on the Student Form: Internalizing Risk Index, Self-
Regulation Risk Index, and Personal Adjustment Risk Index)

5. Validity indexes that identify responses that may be overly negative or inconsistent.

3 Administration & Pricing Options Overview

Administration Options

Q-global ® offers the following administration options for the BASC–3 BESS.

1. Manual Entry (ME): The test is administered using the paper-pencil format and the
raw scores or item responses are manually entered into the Q-global software.

2. O
n-screen administration (OSA): The test is administered to the examinee on-screen
on a web-enabled computer via the Q-global software. OSA may be administered
with or without Test Session Lock.

4
Select With Test Session Lock if you want to administer an assessment on a web-
enabled computer and to lock the testing session preventing the examinee from
exiting the assessment. Test Session Lock is recommended for examiners who want
to restrict an examinee from accessing an internet browser, programs, or files stored
on the computer.

Note: Test Session Lock is not available for mobile devices, including tablets, and is
not intended to replace a proctor for those assessments requiring supervision during
an administration. We strongly recommend using Chrome™, Firefox ®, or Safari ®.

3. Remote on screen administration (ROSA): The examinee or rater is sent an email

invitation with a link to launch and administer the test at a remote location. ROSA is
available for specific tests.

Pricing Options

Pearson offers the following pricing options for Q-global scoring and reporting for the
BASC–3 BESS.

1. Pay per report generated

2. Annual subscription: offers unlimited use for scoring and reporting for a limited
number of tests. This option is ideal for high volume users of a particular test.

Important note: Each subscription is per user for the product only and begins on the
date of order processing unless otherwise requested.

6 FAQs
How is the tool used?

The BASC–3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System is designed for use by schools,
mental health clinics, pediatric clinics, communities, and researchers to screen for a
variety of behavioral and emotional disorders that can lead to adjustment problems.

The system includes five forms that can be used individually or in any combination:

• Teacher Form, Preschool (Ages 3 through 5)

• Teacher Form, Child/Adolescent (Grades K through 12)

• Parent Form, Preschool (Ages 3 through 5)

• Parent Form, Child/Adolescent (Grades K through 12)

• Student Form, Child/Adolescent (Grades 3 through 12)

Each form ranges from 20 to 29 items, requires no formal training for the raters, and is
easy to complete, taking only 5 to 10 minutes of administration time.

How was the BASC–3 BESS developed?

The BASC-3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System has been normed on
a representative sample that closely matches recent U.S. Census population
characteristics. T scores and percentiles are available for the general population.
