In-Class Material: Class 05 (Chapters 2.4~2.5)

1. Statically indeterminate structures

(a) Statically indeterminate structures

- Statically determinate: reactions and internal forces can

be determined solely from free-body diagrams and
equations of _____________.

- Statically indeterminate: otherwise

- Example: axially loaded bar with fixed boundary

conditions at both ends (→)

- How to solve? Introduce equation of compatibility

- Equations (1) and (2) are defined in terms of different

terms (force and displacement) → Use force and
displacement relationship

- Now, Eq. (2) becomes

- Solving Eq. (1) and (3) together, one can get

- With these reactions, one can obtain the internal forces and the elongations. For
example, the vertical displacement of point C is

- Stresses can be found too. For example, the normal stress in the segment AC is

(b) Terminologies

- Equilibrium equations: static equations

- Compatibility equations: geometric equations, equations of consistent

deformations

- Force-displacement relations: constitutive relations

- Stiffness method (displacement method) vs flexibility method (force method)

2. Thermal effects

(a) Thermal effects (expands when heated; contracted

when cooled)

- For most structural materials, thermal strain 𝜀𝑇 is

proportional to the temperature change Δ𝑇

𝛼: coefficient of thermal expansion (1/𝐾=1/℃) or (1/℉)

- Stress that would cause the thermal strain caused by Δ𝑇:

e.g., the temperature change 𝛥𝑇 = 100℉ causes the same strain produced by
29,000 psi (typical allowable stress of stainless steel)

- Temperature-displacement relation:
