Software
Supported PC operating systems include Windows 95 (all versions),
Windows NT 4.0 or later, and DOS with Windows 3.1x.
Hardware
You need a 386TM, 486TM, or PentiumTM class PC.
Overview
SyQuest software includes SparQ device drivers and SyQuest utilities.
Depending on your package, bonus software may also be included.
Table 2-1 shows which software is required or optional and its location:
This option lets you easily set up your SparQ drive when visiting another
PC. Then you can quickly copy files to and from the PC’s hard disk. Or, you
can work exclusively from your SparQ cartridge so that you do not affect
the PC’s hard disk.
On a PC running Windows 95, the driver is copied to the hard disk. On a
PC running Windows 3.1x, the driver is copied into memory (RAM) for the
current session only. This is how to run the Visit program:
Bonus software
The Starter Cartridge that comes with your SparQ drive may include bonus
software to enhance your use of the drive. This software has specific
system requirements that you can easily view. What you do with this
software is entirely optional:
• You can install the available application(s) on your hard disk, as
long as your PC meets the system requirements.
• You can simply save (that is, leave) the bonus software on the
cartridge for possible installation at a later date.
• You can delete the software from the cartridge after installing any
desired application(s) and use the cartridge for personal files.
You can install the optional application(s) when you install the SyQuest
utilities, or at a later date. For Windows 3.1x, follow the DOS installation
program prompts. For Windows 95 and Windows NT, use this procedure:
Accessing files
Every PC with Windows software includes one or more desktop file
managers, for example, Windows Explorer. Desktop file managers allow
you to view all the files on your computer. Each of your computer
devices, including your SparQ drive, has an icon (with a drive letter) that
you can left-click to see its directories (or folders) and files.
Another way to access files is simply to open a window for the folder that
contains those files. Instead of using a desktop file manager, directly select
the device (or drive) containing the desired file folder. This is an excellent
method if you already know the location of files you want to view or
manipulate. This method works as easily for the SparQ drive as it does for
your hard disk. In Windows 95 or Windows NT, for example, double-click
My Computer, then double-click the icon for your SparQ drive. This opens
a window showing the contents of your SparQ cartridge.
When you double-click (select) a file, you can open the file with its
associated application to read or write to the file. Or, simply select a file
and choose to delete, copy, or move the file. You can manipulate file
folders in the same way. These operations are much the same for your
SparQ drive as they are for your computer’s hard disk and other devices.
Note: When you use the drag and drop method to move files from
one device to another, your computer performs a copy operation, not
a move operation. Any file that you drag onto or off your SparQ drive
also remains at its point of origin until you specifically delete that file.
Transferring files
Your SparQ drive is an excellent vehicle for transferring files between
your home computer and your laptop or office computer. Also, you may
need to send or deliver files to a friend, colleague, or client who also has
a SparQ drive. A SparQ cartridge has highly reliable media and ample
space for your files.
Your SparQ drive provides a fast and efficient solution for moving large
files, folders, libraries, and databases. You can copy files to and from a
SparQ cartridge very quickly, and you can keep your large folders intact.
You can use any available SparQ parallel port or EIDE drive at your
destination to read or write files on a cartridge. With the parallel port
drive, you can quickly attach to any PC with Windows software. The
Installation Diskette includes a shortcut that lets you visit the PC and
install the SparQ driver within 30 seconds. See “Visit program—take your
Parallel Port drive with you” on page 2-3.
Archiving files
Carefully consider which files you want to archive and how often.
Develop strategies that work best for your home and office. Here are
some suggestions:
• Regularly back up your working directories, files, and databases.
Protect yourself from accidental file loss or corruption due to
computer crashes or contracted viruses.
• Keep multiple versions of files under development so that you
can recover earlier versions if needed.
• Protect highly confidential information. Keep confidential files
offline by storing your cartridges in a secure location.
• Secure valuable information by putting your cartridges in a
fireproof vault.
SparQ cartridges give you the flexibility and portability to safely secure
files offline. If you build a library of SparQ cartridges, write the contents
of each cartridge on its cartridge label for easy access. Or, reverse the
paper insert from the cartridge case and write the contents there. If you
need to keep a more detailed record of cartridge contents, consider
adding a Readme file to that cartridge.
Built-in safeguards
Two of the greatest dangers to a removable cartridge hard drive are
contamination and physical shock. The SparQ drive and cartridge are
exceptionally well designed to handle both situations, but it is prudent to
exercise care in minimizing these and other possible hazards.
Your SparQ drive and cartridge have the most contaminant-free operating
environment available in a removable cartridge hard drive. The drive has a
special sealing door and a microparticle filter. During operation, the drive
continuously cleans its inner environment and that of the cartridge. The
microparticle filter captures any particles swept off disk surfaces or
otherwise introduced, for example, when you open the drive door to
insert a cartridge.
Further, the drive is built for rugged operation. Its read/write heads are
parked off the disk when power is off and when ejecting the cartridge.
The cartridge includes a mechanism that prevents the disk from contacting
the cartridge casing if you drop or bump the cartridge.
These are some of the safeguards designed into your SparQ drive and
cartridge. The care that you exercise will help you realize these design
benefits.
Q. Can I leave a cartridge in the drive all the time, even when the
power is Off?
A. Yes, you can leave a cartridge in the drive as long as you do not
move the drive. Put the cartridge in its case when moving the drive.
Otherwise, you may damage the cartridge or drive and void your
warranty. Also, completely remove a cartridge once it is ejected and
put the cartridge in its protective case. Generally, it is safer to keep
your cartridge in its protective case when not using the cartridge.
