Course Description (CHEM 1071)

This course in general chemistry is aimed at introducing engineering students to fundamental chemical
concepts and principles. The major topics covered in this course include manipulating data, the periodic
table, and nomenclature of common compounds, stoichiometry, solutions, reactions, ideal gas laws,
thermochemistry and thermodynamics, electronic structure of the atom, molecular geometry and
hybridization.

Course Objectives
This course seeks to:

 lay a solid foundation in general chemistry for engineers especially for those seeking a major in
petroleum and chemical engineering.
 bring about awareness of the diverse roles chemistry plays in our everyday lives
 identify and eradicate misconceptions in general chemistry
 motivate students to take responsibility for their own learning process
 discourage rote learning and promote effective study habits
 facilitate acquisition of problem-solving skills
 encourage students to correlate theoretical chemistry to engineering applications and machinery

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 perform scientific measurements and calculations using appropriate significant figures and units
 list, name and classify most of the elements in the chemical periodic table
 identify, name and write chemical formulae of common chemical substances encountered in our
daily activities
 calculate molar amounts of chemical substances
 determine chemical formulae of chemical substances using the mole concept
 write balanced chemical equations and perform stoichiometric calculations
 identify types of chemical reaction and use appropriate reaction equations to represent them
 describe different ideal gas laws and their applications
 calculate molar mass; density, volume or pressure for a particular gas by using ideal gas laws
 calculate heat of reactions using calorimetry concepts and/or using Hess’s law or standard
enthalpies of formation of chemical substances
 write electron configurations of atoms and monatomic ions
 draw Lewis structures and predict shapes of simple molecules and polyatomic ions
 describe and explain chemical bonding in chemical substances

Skills and Attitudes on successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 think independently and logically

 manipulate and interpret scientific data
 judge the quality of a measurement in terms of accuracy and precision
 manage their time and organise their work efficiently

Course Topics

Measuring and Manipulating Data: units, significant figures, dimensional analysis, precision and
accuracy.

Academic Code of Conduct:

I. Any form of cheating, plagiarism, and personation, falsification of a document as well as any other
form of dishonest behaviour related to the obtention of academic gain or the avoidance of
evaluative exercises committed by a student is an academic offence under this code.
II. Without limiting the generality of the above, academic offences include, but are not restricted to,
the carrying out or attempting to carry out or participating in:
a. personation – assuming the identity of another person or having another person assume
one’s own identity
b. plagiarism – the presentation of the work of another person as one’s own or without proper
acknowledgement
c. the obtention by theft or any other means of the questions or answers of an examination or
of any other University-related resource that one is not authorised to possess
d. the possession or use during an examination of any non-authorised documents or materials
or possessing a device allowing access to or use of any non-authorised documents or
materials
e. the use of another person’s examination during an examination
f. communication with anyone other than an invigilator during an examination or the
obtention of any non-authorised assistance during an examination
g. tearing or mutilating an examination booklet, inserting pages into a booklet or taking a
booklet from the examination room

h. the falsification of a document, in particular a document transmitted to the University or a
document of the University, whether transmitted or not to a third party, whatever the
circumstances

Course Assessment: (Reading material will be included in the examination)

• In Class Exams: Two (25 points each) exams will be given every 8-9 lectures (max 3 chapters). These
exams will focus primarily on recent lecture topics, they will be cumulative. NO MAKE-UP
EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN!
• Test grading. If you believe that you should have gotten more points than you got for any reason other
than a simple addition error, write a statement making your case. NO VERBAL COMPLAINS
PLEASE.
• Missed tests. If you miss a test without either a certified medical excuse or prior instructor approval,
you will be given zero (0) for that test. Tests missed with certified medical excuses or prior
instructor approval will be dealt individually. ONLY ONE MISSED TEST WILL BE
ACCEPTED WITH A MEDICAL EXCUSE. ONLY OFFICIAL MEDICAL CERTIFICATES
FROM FAMCO WILL BE ACCEPTED.
• Attendance. Attendance is compulsory (University Regulation). Students who miss class due to an
excused absence should present documented medical proof. If a student misses 5% of the total
hours of the course without any valid excuse he/she will be given a warning notice. Missing 10%
of the total hours will lead to barring the student from the final exam and he/she will receive a
grade of FW.
• Assessment & calculation of grades.
A weighted average grade will be calculated as follows:
 Exams
 Exam-1: 25 %
 Exam-2: 25 %
 Final examination: 50 %
