Addressing Surface Water Pollution in

Communities Across America
OGL 343 - Team 2
Taylor Bopp, Asheli Eldridge, Laura Lyn, & Malak Skafi
General Subject
Our teams focus is Environmental:

Our specific focus is Surface Water Pollutants

which can range from pesticides, fungicides

and fertilizers.

( Justmeans, n.d.)

Did you know?

That the pesticides used by farmers causes the

highest water pollution compared to all other
farming/agricultural activities (Ghosh, 2020)?
Issues & Concerns
Why focus on surface water pollutants?

Surface water pollutants make water unsafe

for consumption. It negatively impacts the

balance of the entire ecosystem. Action must

be taken now as we have already started to

experience the impacts that these

contaminants have on our community at large.

(Toughani, 2020)

The area we are focusing our efforts on is

agricultural soil run-off.

How We Can Help

EDUCATE ENCOURAGE ESTABLISH
Educate the public, Encourage remediation Establish legislation
farmers, and legislators through soil samples, that protects surface
regarding the effects of nutrient tracking, and water and provides
farming on surface water alternative farming incentives and grants

resources, incentives, regenerative farming. implement organic
and workshops on
farming practices.

practices.
Public Campaign
● Our Campaign: Structure a mass media campaign that leads with the impacts of
surface water pollutants and how communities are being impacted by excessive
nutrient runoff. Then lean into the resources we have developed for communities and
how people can get involved.
● Community outreach: Participating in community programs and events such as
farmers markets, festivals, and farmer outreach that will allow us to connect with the
people impacted by and contributing to surface water pollutants.
● Social Media Ads: We can run social media targeted ads on sites such as Youtube,
Instagram, TikTok, or other streaming services that have a large audience.
● Education: Providing information and resources to communities through grant
programs, group workshops, information sessions, and youth volunteer programs.
Motto
