Reading comprehension activity and Summary of the academic paper – Yeme, Yoo

1. Look at the paratext:

A. What information does it give to you?

 The paratext gives us information about the global epidemiology about

Hypertension, which is very prevalent. With this, it seeks to demonstrate
the importance of studying the incidence of the disease and how to
prevent by taking action over the modifiable risk factors.

B. What is its context?

 The paper is focused on patients in military setting hospital in Saudi

Arabia that suffer from different stages of Hypertension. It seeks to study
each stage and its risk factors. For this they carried on a blood pressure
analysis and depending on the stage of the disease they related it to
different factors such as, old age, male sex, or family history.

2. Read the whole paper.

A. How is the text organized?

 It has a title and its divided in subtitles with many paragraphs each. But
each subtitle has its own subtitles that divide the paragraphs in different
topics. For example in the introduction, each paragraph talks about the
definition, incidence and risk factors of Hypertension. Its the same in the
section of Material and methods, which talks about the study cohort,
sample size and equations used for the purpose of the study.

This academic paper has an objective point of view since it seeks to prove
something with scientific data without expressing the investigators
opinion.

B. Does it follow the IMRAD structure? How can you tell?

 The paper follows the IMRAD structure because each one of them are the
main subtitles that are also underlined.
3. What new words can you identify? Organize them in lists according to the pattern you
found.

 Investigation:  Human being:

 Constraint  Haemorrhage

 Multinominal  Lipids

 Cohort study  Saudis

 Cross-sectional  Marital

 Morbidity
 Arbitrarily

 Misclassification

4. Write down a 20 line (200 words) summary of the whole paper.

To begin with, this academic paper named “Investigating the incidence and risk factors of
hypertension: A multicentre retrospective cohort study in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia” it is about
Hypertension and the incidence of each stage of the disease and how high was among the
patients investigated at military hospitals of Saudi Arabia. Also, the logistic model proposed in
the present study was of great use to predict the development of different stages of
hypertension. In addition to this, it has taken into account the different risk factors such as age,
sex, marital status, family history, smoking status, and physical activity. All these mentioned are
modifiable and non-modifiable factors. To relate this disease and its risk factors, the
investigators used as method of study the measuring of blood pressure which pursues to related
those two variables. The main and most important purpose of this investigation is to develop
better strategies to improve awareness. Besides, it remarks the importance in screening,
treatment, and management of hypertension. Taking all this into account, we believe that this
investigation not only has a goal to study this group in particular but also to help them by
preventing and controlling the many factors mentioned before so to improve their life quality.
