Class-XI COM CD:03

(1) A 10 g bullet is fired with a velocity of 300 ms–1 into a pendulum bob which as a mass of 990 g. How high does

the pendulum bob (plus bullet) swing after the collision?

(2) A 500 g ball moves along the x-axis with a speed of 20 ms–1. It hits a bat and reverses its direction so its speed

along the x-axis is now 30 ms–1. Find its change in momentum and its change in kinetic energy.

(3) A 4 kg object moving at 5 ms–1 makes a perfectly elastic collision with 1 kg object initially at rest. Find the final

velocities of the objects.

(4) A ball with an initial speed of 4 ms–1 has a head–on collision with another ball at rest which is three times as

massive. What are the final velocities if the collision is elastic?

(5) After an elastic collision between two balls of equal masses, one is observed to have a speed of 3 ms–1 along

the positive x-axis and the other has a speed of 2 ms–1 along the negative x-axis. What were the original

velocities of the balls?

(6) A ball of mass m makes a head-on elastic collision with a second ball at rest and rebounds with a speed equal

to one-third its original speed. What is the mass of the second ball?

(7) A block of mass m = 2 kg slides down 30º incline which is 3.6 m high. At the bottom, it strikes a block of mass

M = 6 kg which is at rest on a horizontal surface (See. Fig.) If the collision is elastic and friction can be ignored,

determine the speed of two blocks after the collision.

(8) Suppose a bomb of mass M is suspended at rest from a cable and detonated exploding into three pieces. As

shown in Fig., half of its mass (M/2) is observed to have a speed ν0 in the +x direction right after the explosion

and another piece of mass M/3 is seen to have a speed of 2ν0 at angle of 37º above the horizontal. Determine

the velocity of third piece whose mass is M/6.
