Martin Engelbrecht engraver, born in Augsburg in 1684, died in the same city in 1756 , is the
brother of Christian Engelbrecht. He illustrated like him numerous works. Among these are :

Edition originale et premier tirage de cet extraordinaire ensemble baroque de style

Rocaille riche de 84 estampes en superbes coloris d'époque représentant des hommes et
des femmes habillés avec les ustensiles de leur profession. Ces travestis étaient destinés à des
ballets. Les gravures sont signées de A. Degmeier, P. F. Engelbrecht, C. F. Hörmann, Kösler, J. F.
Schmit, J. Stelzer.

Martin Engelbrecht graveur, né à Augsbourg en 1684, mort dans la même ville en 1756 est le
frère de Christian Engelbrecht. Il illustra comme lui de nombreuses œuvres. On cite parmi
celles-ci : La guerre de succession espagnole, et Les Architectes princiers, de P. Decker. Il
exécuta également 92 vues de Venise et 192 gravures rocaille illustrant des hommes et des
femmes habillés avec les outils de leur profession. Cette suite célèbre créée il y a près de trois
siècles, déjà fort rare à l'origine en coloris de l'époque, se raréfia considérablement au cours
des siècles suivants devant l'engouement pour cette œuvre d'exception qui rappelait les
métiers de Larmessin réalisés peu auparavant. Depuis le XIXè siècle, les amateurs ont dû
s'habituer à collectionner ces estampes à l'unité et à les faire encadrer. Même réduites à
l'unité, elles tendent à disparaître des marchés. Présenter un tel ensemble de 84 estampes en
coloris d'époque et en ce début XXIè siècle est un bonheur bibliophilique.

costumes représentent un Brossetier, une Tourneuse, une Cordonnière, une Faiseuse de
peignes, une Relieuse de livres, un Serrurier, l'Horlogère, le Boucher, un Sculpteur, un Cartier,
une Vendeuse d'images, un Joaillier, un Faiseur de chandelles, une Lutière, la Femme d'un
Tapissier, une Femme de Maçon, un Cartier, etc.

Au XVIIIe siècle est qualifié de baroque un style artistique contraire aux règles classiques et
jugé extravagant, voire de mauvais goût. Il faudra attendre la fin de l'emprise du classicisme,
en art comme en littérature, pour que " baroque " perde son sens péjoratif et que soit
reconnue sa contribution positive et originale dans tous les domaines de l'art, l'architecture,
la sculpture, la peinture, ainsi que la musique et la littérature.

Dans les arts plastiques, la baroque propose un style à la fois très structuré, qui joue
abondamment de la symétrie, et très dynamique : il insère ses formes dans un puissant
mouvement de volutes et de spirales : par ses e!ets dramatiques, sa recherche du
spectaculaire, il vise à susciter l'émotion. Les caractéristiques qui le définissent trouvent
sinon leur justification du moins nombre d'éléments d'explication dans le contexte politique,
culturel et religieux bien particulier qui l'a vu naître. Un contexte historique qui permet
également de comprendre comment et où ce style s'est répandu.

C'est dans les pays catholiques que l'art baroque s'est le mieux développé, surtout dans les
dernières années de la Contre-réforme, aux environs de 1630. Pour s'opposer à la progression
du protestantisme, l'Eglise romaine, après le concile de Trente (qui s'achève en 1563)
réa!irme ses doctrines traditionnelles et s'engage dans une intense activité missionnaire.

On peut considérer les styles Rococo et Rocaille comme deux manifestations tardives du
baroque, mais bien distinctes entre elles et pas forcément concomitantes. Ainsi la rocaille
concerne la France et une mode très particulière qui régna surtout dans les arts décoratifs de
la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle avec un apogée entre 1720 et 1740 : le rococo constitue
l'épanouissement tardif – entre 1720 et 1780 -, principalement en France et en Allemagne,
d'un style de construction et de décor qui dérive manifestement du baroque italien, mais
reçoit aussi des apports français et notamment rocaille.
