information package to guide you through the steps you must complete.

The Office of Internationalization provides specialized support for international and exchange students joining the StFX
community from around the world. We pride ourselves on offering excellent services; in 2020 international students at
StFX voted our office number one in Canada and number six in the world in an international survey of student
satisfaction. We look forward to supporting you during your time at StFX.

Support services offered by the Office of Internationalization include:

Next Steps to Joining StFX
Follow these steps to make sure you have completed all the requirements to be successful in your journey to Canada and
starting your studies at StFX.

STEP 1: CONFIRM YOUR ACCEPTANCE


Confirming your acceptance to StFX secures your seat in the program. To accept your offer of admission and confirm your
intention to attend StFX, please visit www.stfx.ca/confirm

STEP 2: APPLY FOR STUDY PERMIT


International students who will be studying in Canada in a program longer than six months require a study permit issued by
the Government of Canadian. Students can apply for their study permit online through the Immigration, Refugees &
Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/
study-permit/apply.html. Students are encouraged to apply for their immigration documents early, as applications can
require months to process.
Students traveling from outside Canada may also require either a temporary resident visa (TRV), or electronic travel
authorization (eTA), to enter the country. If you require a visa or eTA you will be able to apply for these documents at the
time you apply for your study permit application.
STEP 3: APPLY FOR ON-CAMPUS RESIDENCE
On-campus residence provides international students with an opportunity to make friends with other StFX students, get
involved on campus, have an immersive campus experience, and become a member of our community. Ninety percent of
first year students choose to live on campus. Student may choose to live in shared dormitory-style rooms, private hotel-
style rooms, or shared apartment-style rooms. Some residence buildings feature private washrooms complete with showers,
while others offer shared kitchens that are available for students who would prefer to cook their own meals. Detailed
information on residence building and room types can be found on the StFX website: stfx.ca/student-life/residence-life.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING AT STFX


Once you have confirmed your acceptance, you may wish to apply for on campus residence. The application can be found at
https://accommodations.stfx.ca/. You will need your StFX ID Number to apply. The StFX Housing Office will review your
application and will connect with you to provide more information. If you have questions, you can connect with them at
residence@stfx.ca.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING IN ANTIGONISH


Off-campus housing is available in the town of Antigonish, both near and far from the StFX campus. Apartments vary
greatly in cost, location, condition, and size. If a student chooses to live off campus they will need to find an apartment and
connect with the landlord to discuss the terms of the lease (contract). Students who wish to rent housing off-campus find
available apartments using websites such as Kijiji, Rent Gorilla, X-Off, or Facebook.

STEP 4: EMAIL ACCOUNT SETUP


Communications from the university will be sent to your StFX email account once you are registered in your
courses. Check this email regularly to keep up to date with important information.

To access your StFX email account:

• Visit office365.stfx.ca
• Log in using your StFX username and password, found in your acceptance letter
• Click on the ‘Outlook’ tile to access your email

Access to your StFX email account is not required until you register for courses. If you wish to access this account now,
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is required the first time you login to your StFX Microsoft 365 account. MFA is a simple
way of protecting user information and data by requiring users to provide more than just their username and password
when attempting to log in. It helps validate who you are by adding a second step in the sign in process. If you are require
assistance with MFA, please visit MFA Support.
STEP 5: REGISTER FOR COURSES
New students beginning their studies in September will be able to register for courses in July. More information to
come regarding the registration process.

Once students are registered in courses, changes can be made to a student’s class registration up until the end of the
first week of classes. In the StFX Student Service Portal: portal.stfx.ca, you will find other useful information like
course descriptions, grade reports, and your class schedule.

STEP 6: ARRIVING IN ANTIGONISH


StFX University is located in the town of Antigonish, in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The nearest airport to
Antigonish is the Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ). From the airport, students can take the Maritime Bus
directly to campus. A bus ticket to travel from the airport to Antigonish cost approximately $45.00, and is
approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes in duration. Students can book their bus ticket by visiting:
maritimebus.com.

STEP 7: ATTEND INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION


The StFX Office of Internationalization facilitates an International Student Orientation program at the beginning of the
fall (September) and winter (January) semesters. This program welcomes and supports new international and
exchange students at StFX. International students who have paid their confirmation fees, will be contacted by email
with instructions on how to register for international orientation. This year's International Student Orientation will take
place in late August 2023. More information to follow.

Orientation is your opportunity to connect with other international students and find out information that will get you
ready for the term. Topics will include:

• StFX 101 – What you need to know for your first week
• How to be successful in the Canadian classroom
• Adjusting to living and learning in Canada
• How to access health care and how your health insurance works
• Working in Canada during and after your studies
• Campus resources and supports

*What is DCB? DCB, or declining balance, is a debit system allowing students to purchase items at

Tuition and Fees
International students are required to pay 65% of their total fees before September 15th each year. The remaining 35% is
due by January 15th. Students beginning their studies in January must pay 100% of their fees by January 15th. If you wish
to pay your tuition fees prior to arriving in Canada, as a requirement of the Study Direct Stream (SDS) study permit
application path, you can request a receipt of your payment by emailing the Student Accounts Office at
studentaccounts@stfx.ca.

HOW TO PAY TUITION


Once you have confirmed your acceptance with StFX you can pay your tuition and fees. You will require your StFX ID Number
to apply payment to your student account. It takes 5-7 days for the payment to be processed.
