Access levels

To prevent un-authorized operation of the system there are access

levels to protect the different functions of the CS4000. The user has to
login to the system or unlock the lock (mainly industrial applications)
before any vital operations can be performed. Without access to an
authorization code or a key the user can only view fire and fault alarms
and mute the local buzzer.

In industrial applications, access level 1 is the basic level. Open the

lock to go to access level 2. The system automatically returns to access
level 1when the lock is locked or after 30 minutes of inactivity.
In marine applications, access level 2 is the basic level. These
applications do not have a lock. The system automatically returns to
access level 2 after 30 minutes of inactivity.

There are five different access levels:

Access level Procedure to enter level Description of user

Disconnections
It is possible to disconnect different parts of the system, such as:
zones, detectors, manual call points, section units, alarm devices,
external control devices and loops. All disconnections are placed in a
disconnection list. The yellow indication DISC. is lit on the control
unit when the fust disconnection is defined in the system and remains
lit until all disconnections are reconnected.

To be able to make a disconnection you must enter access level 2B or

higher.

WARNING! When a fire detector or zone is disconnected the fire

alarm system will not be able to detect any occurring fue in that area.
It is therefore important that disconnections are minimized in terms of
quantity of disconnected units and duration of time.
For example if dual detectors heat/smoke are installed it is possible to
disconnect only the smoke detection part of the detector and keep the
heat detecting part active or vice versa.

Disconnections available
There are four different disconnections available:

Permanent disconnection
The disconnection is permanent until it is manually reconnected.
Note: It is possible to limit the disconnection time by defining a
maximal disconnection time in the configuration program.

Timer disconnection
Disconnection is instant and lasts for the time period entered (hh:mm).
Maximum disconnection time is 23h 59m.

Clock disconnection
Enter reconnection time. Disconnection is instant and the reconnection
will take place next time the entered time occurs. Maximum
disconnection time is 23h 59m.

Periodic disconnection
A disconnection for a certain time period during certain days of the
week. Example: Disconnect zone 1 each Tuesday and Friday
between 7.00- 17.00.

Salwico CS4000

Testing
After installation of the fire alarm system the different parts of the
system shall be tested to assure correct function. The CS4000 has a
special test mode, which makes the testing easier.

When a zone is in test mode it will:

• Not activate any external alarm devices or controls in case of a
fire (this function can be turned off).
• The alarm level is lowered to give quick response to test gas.
• Detectors and manual call points in the zone will blink.
• Each tested detector and manual call point will indicate
activation with a red LED.
• The units in alarm are automatically reset when the heat or
smoke concentration is under the alarm level or if the manual
call point is reset.

Fire alarms from zones not in test mode will be handled normally by
the system.

Note: The tested zone will automatically return to normal operation

after two hours.

Test a fire-detecting zone

Put the zone into test mode under: Menu/3 Disconnections/1 New
disconn./ 5 Test Mode
Enter the zone number and confirm with OK button
The indications DISC., Test and Zone/Unit will be lit to confirm the
test mode.

It is now safe to test each detector, manual call point etc in this fire
zone during two hours. Use suitable testing equipment.
All alarms will be listed under: Menu/7 History/1 Fire History List

Reset test mode

After testing it is important to return the tested zone into normal
condition again. Make sure that there is no detectors or manual call
points still in alarm before leaving test mode.
The zones in test mode are listed in the disconnection list, found under:
Menu/3 Disconnections /2 Disconnection list.
Choose the zone in the disconnection list and then press RESET.

Test the control unit display

It is possible to test the alphanumerical display, all indications on the
control panel and the local buzzer with the function Test display,
found under: Menu/5 Settings/4 Test display.

Chapter 2: Testing
Consiliurn recommends that the fire alarm system is tested at least
once a year to assure correct function.
The CS4000 has a special test mode, which makes the testing easier.

Characteristics for a zone in test mode:

• It will not activate any external alarm devices or controls in
case of a fire (this function can be turned off).

Put the zone into test mode: Menu/ 3 Disconnections/ 1 New
disconn./ 5 Test Mode. Enter the zone number and confirm with OK
button
The indications DISC., TEST and ZONE/UNIT will be lit to confirm
the test mode.

It is now safe to test each detector, manual call point etc in this fire
zone during two hours. Use suitable testing equipment, available
from Consiliurn.
All alarms will be listed under: Menu/ 7 History/ 1 Fire History List

Heat detectors
Heat detectors are preferably tested with heat detector tester VDT -1,
part. no. 9300, available from Consilium.
• Apply heat to the sensing element until alarm is indicated by
a red indication.

Important:
If other test equipments are used, for example cigarette lighter or
heating gun, make sure not to over-heat the detector by holding the
heat-source to close to the detector. This will damage the detectors,
for example causing the plastic to melt.
Service & Maintenance manual Chapter 1: CS4000 block diagram
Salwico CS4000
4

Smoke detectors
Smoke detectors are preferably tested with test gas equipment Solo
330, available from Consilium.
• Spray test gas on to the detector during 0.5 second. Wait 10
seconds until new gas is sprayed during 1 second. Repeat this
procedure until the detector indicates alarm with a red
indication.

If other test methods are used, make sure not to damage the detector.

Flame detectors
Flame detectors may be tested with an ordinary cigarette lighter.
• Turn up the flame to a height of approximately 5 em. Hold it
in front of the detector at a distance of about 2-5 meters.
Move the lighter slowly during the test to obtain a flickering
flame until alarm is indicated with a red indication.

Test Fault conditions

The fire alarm central continuously monitors the
system components and will report any fault
condition on the control panel with both optical and
audible indication.

It is possible to test fault indications by following the

below procedures:
Please note that a fault condition is only possible to
reset when the cause is remedied.

Removed detector fault

1. Remove a detector.
2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute).
3. Reinsert the detector
4. Reset the fault condition on the control panel.

Fuse fault
Note: Before a fuse is removed, make sure which functions
that will be affected by the removal.
1. Remove a fuse.
2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute).
3. Reinsert the fuse.
4. Reset the fault condition on the control panel.
Service & Maintenance manual Chapter 1: CS4000 block diagram
Salwico CS4000
5

Battery fault
1. Remove a battery fuse.
2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute).
3. Reinsert the fuse.
4. Reset the fault condition on the control panel.

Earth fault
1. Connect one of the loop cables to earth via a
2, 7k0hm resistor.
2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute).
3. Remove the earth connection.
4. Reset the fault condition on the control panel.

Loop cable break

I. Open up the loop cable.
2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute).
3. If the detector loop is double fed: Verify that
each of the two branches can detect fire alarms
by testing a detector on each branch.
4. Close the loop cable.
5. Reset the fault condition on the control panel.

Power supply
Test the back up power supply (emergency 230VAC
or batteries).

1. Removing the mains power supply.

2. Verify that the fault is indicated on the control
unit (this may take up to 1 minute), and that
the system remains operational.
3. If there is an emergency power supply in
addition to the batteries, remove this also. The
system should now operate on the batteries
only.
4. Connect all disconnected power supplies.
5. Reset the fault condition(s) on the control
panel.
Service & Maintenance manual Chapter 1: CS4000 block diagram
Salwico CS4000
6

Reset test mode

After testing it is important to return the tested zone into normal
condition again. Make sure that there are no detectors or manual call
points still in alarm before leaving test mode .
The zones in test mode are listed in the disconnection list, found
under: Menu/3 Disconnections 12 Disconnection list.
Choose the zone in the disconnection list and then press RESET.

Test the control unit display

It is possible to test the alphanumerical display, all indications on the

control panel and the local buzzer with the function Test display,
found under: Menu/ 5 Settings/ 4 Test display.

Chapter 3: Cleaning of fire detectors

The CS4000 fire alarm system continuously monitors the
detectors and will give early warnings if they are polluted or
malfunctioning in other ways. The methods for cleaning
detectors depends of the type of detector, see below.

If the cleaning is initiated by a "dirty sensor" fault in the

control panel, then try to reset this fault after cleaning. If this
does not succeed, replace the detector.

Smoke detectors
Clean the detector with a vacuum cleaner or by blowing
high-pressure instrument air on it.
The detector house is cleaned with a damp cloth.
Note: The high-pressure air must be of instrument type
(clean, not containing oil etc.)

Heat detectors
The sensor part does normally not need to be cleaned.
The detector house is cleaned with a damp cloth.

Flame detectors
Clean the protective glass over the sensor by a grease solvent
such as soap or alcohol.
The detector house is cleaned with a damp cloth.

ID address on DIP switches

All addressable loop units must be given an address between
1-254 to be operational. The loop units located on the same
physical loop must all have unique addresses. The address is
set by a 8 pole DIP switch located on each addressable unit.
The address is set by the 8 pole DIP switch. The DIP switch
values follows the bina

1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128
The 8 pole DIP switch values.

The value of the address is set according to the switches set

to ON position. For example:

=47
Address example.

The switches numbered 1,2,3,4 and 6 are set to ON position.

The values for these switches are 1+2+4+8+32=47.

Important: Seal the address switch on the detectors with the

attached label after the address has been set.

Hot Plug&Piay (adding/deleting loop units)

The CS4000 system is equipped with a Hot Plug&Play
function enabling the user to add or delete detectors during
normal operation without the need to change the
configuration file with a PC and restarting the system.
The configuration file may be updated during normal
operation from service menu 6:5 or direct from the fault list,
menu 1.1.
This function is very useful, especially during installation. If
the CS4000 central detects additional or missing loop units,
they are simply added to/deleted from the configuration file
during normal operation.

Note: The changes to the configuration file is updated in the

RAM memory, but will not saved permanently until it has
been saved under: Menu/ 6 Service menu/ 9 Save changes to
configuration. If the configuration file is not changed
permanently, any changes done will be lost if the system is
re-started.

Change configuration file from the fault list
Adding a loop unit from the fault list
If the CS4000 detects additional or missing loop units
compared to the configuration file, they are added to the fault
list.
1. Open the fault list: Menu/ 1 Fault alarms/ 1 Fault list
2. Select the detector to add from the list (fault no. 3 is

FIRE ALARM CAB INET
Installation Manual Chapter 2: Installation 4
Salwico CS4000

Chapter 2: Installation
The different parts of the CS4000 fire alarm system, the central unit, the
control units, repeaters and the loop units, should first be mechanically
installed. The different loop units are thereafter electrically installed and
set up according to the definition of the loops. The cables must be tested
separately before the loops are connected to the central unit. This
eliminates any problem with the cable and the electrical installation of
the loop units. The installation is completed with the electrical
installation of the central unit and the control unit(s).

Mechanical installation
Install the central unit, the control units, repeaters and the loop units •
according to the drawings. The control unit can be delivered installed in
the central unit or as a separate unit. Separate drawings are delivered
with the system.

Central units
The central and control unit, even the external control and repeater
units, are delivered in cabinets (IP22) for wall or console mounting.
Separate drawings are delivered with the system. The central units shall
be installed indoors in areas with 0- 80% RH non-condensing and
temperatures ranging from ooc to 50°C.

Loop units
A loop unit is a unit that can be connected to a loop or a conventional
zone, i.e. detector, manual call point, address unit, timer etc.

The mechanical installation of the different types of loop and zone units
is described on the data sheets respectively.

Electrical installation

Cable requirements

External system channel

The cables for the external system channel to control panels and
repeater units must fulfil the following requirements:

• 2x2x0.5mm2 twisted pairs

• Max allowed cable length is 1200 meter.

If shielded cable is used, the shield shall be connected to ground only in

the fire alarm central, not at the external control/repeater panels.

Detector loops

The loop cable must fulfil the following requirements. We refer to

current regulations for the rest of the specification.

Loop: Min. 2 x 0.3 mrn2

Sub-loop: Min. 2 x 0.3 mrn2

However, Consilium recommends using standard unshielded cable

min 2 x 0.75 mm2.

Loop lengths
The length of a loop or a sub-loop depends on the following three
parameters, type of cable, shielded or unshielded cable and power
consumption. A cable is considered to be shielded if the shielded part of
the cable is more than 10% of the total length. Never exceed the
recommended cable lengths mentioned below.

The loop units are divided into three types, depending on their
individual load on the loop.

Type 1: Max capacity

• All Salwico addressable analogue loop units not listed under "Type 2
or 3"

Type 2: Reduced capacity Ievell

• SID-38T
• RDJ-2T
• TDT -2 and TDT -2K, rate-of-rise 57°C and rate-of-rise 86°
• CSS3300 rectifier

point ( 116) and sub central ( 114).
• AE-2E with separate power supply.
• NS-AUV, NS-AOS-IS, NS-AIN1 ID2.

Type 3: Reduced capacity level 2

• All address units with a constant voltage output on the sub-loop

(except AE-2E with separate power supply).
• AE-2 and AE-2K, configured as smoke detector (ID 111 and 124),
flame detector, IR, (ID 123) and heat detector with constant output
on the sub-loop (ID 118).
• AE-2K/I, configured as flame detector, UV, (ID 119) and ISIF (ID

Note:
Leave at least 10% in spare addresses (evenly distributed among the
intervals between short circuit isolators) for future extensions with new
loop units when calculating the number of loop units.
Example (if only type 1 loop units are used):
254 addresses x 0.9= max 228 loop units/loop.

Detector loops

A loop may contain different types and different numbers of loop units.
The connection to the loop depends on the type of loop unit and the
configuration of your system. Some ofthe loop units are connected
directly to the loop and some via address units. The figures on the next
pages are examples of an addressable detector loop and a conventional
detector zone. For more details about connection, see appendix D or
the data sheet for the actual unit.

The information about the electrical installation of each type of loop

unit is provided on the data sheets respectively.
Installation Manual Chapter 2: Installation 7
Salwico CS4000

Important notice:

• Set the address switch on each loop unit before connecting them to
the loop. If an address unit is used, set its ID switch too. See Setting
the address of the loop units later in this chapter and also
Appendix A and B.
• It is recommended that all short circuit isolators are bypassed before
the loop is tested. Join the cores leading to terminals 2 and 4 and the
cores leading to terminals 1 and 3 by means of a temporary
connector block inside the short circuit isolators.
• Do not remove the dust protection cover from the smoke detectors
until all polluting activities (such as construction work) are finished
and the area has been cleaned.

EN54-2 requirements for detector loops

To comply with EN-54-2 (industrial applications) it is not allowed to
have more than 32 detectors or manual call points between two short
circuit isolators on a detector loop. If a short circuit appears on the loop,
the surrounding short circuit isolators will isolate this part of the loop
enabling all other loop units to continue to operate. The LB3 loop board
is equipped with internal short circuit isolators on both the A and B-
sides ofthe loop.
For example: If you plan to have 200 detectors or manual call points on
a loop, you will need: 200/32=6.25~ at least 7 pes of short circuit
isolator evenly spread on the loop.

Test the cable

The cable should be tested for proper function after all the loop units
are connected and before the cable is connected to the central unit. The
cable can only be tested if all short circuit isolators are bypassed.

Note! It is not allowed to use an insulation tester with a voltage

exceeding 3 0 V.

Test 1: Test for cable break

Measure the resistance between the + poles and - poles
respectively. Connect an ohm meter between the+ poles.
Measure and repeat the procedure for the - poles.

The measured value should be less then 130Q for a cable with
a maximum length of 2 km.

Setting alarm levels for conventional zones

The CS4000 system can be programmed to distinguish between fire
alarms generated by a detector or by a manual call point. This is done by
current-measuring on the conventional loops.
Custom current levels are programmable via the Configuration program.
See the separate manual Configuration program manual, chapter 3
ZoneBoard tab.

The system has the below default values for the loop current:
Fault: Normal Alarm 1• Alarm 2•• Fault:
cable break short circuit
conventional loop
f-----+-----+--------+----+------7 current (mA)
0 1 17 58 80

• One detector in alarm

•• Two detectors or a manual call point in alarm

Note: It is only necessary to change the default values if the distinguish

function is desired and not working properly. Test this function before
any changes of alarm levels are performed.

Measure the loop current and adjust the alarm levels (only when necessary)
The current consumption in normal condition may differ due to loop
lengths, cable specification etc. To set the correct alarm levels the loop
current has to be measured.

Use the below procedure to measure the loop current for the following
cases (normally only necessary to measure c):
a) Normal condition
b) Only one smoke detector in alarm
c) Only one manual call point in alarm

1) From the CS4000 control unit, enter Menu/ 6 Service menu/ SLoops
2) Select the Zone Board by using the up- and down arrows.
3) Press OK.
4) Read out the current consumption.
5) When ready, press OK to go back and select the next zone.

Adjust the alarm level2 (80mA as default) in the CS4000 configuration

program to 5-l 0 rnA below the alarm current for one manual call point
in alarm (c).

Adjust the other levels only when necessary.

Installation Manual Chapter 2: Installation 13
Salwico CS4000

Setting the address on loop units.

All addressable loop units such as detectors, manual call points etc
connected to the loop board LB must be given an address between
1-254 to be operational. The loop units located on the same physical
loop must all have unique addresses.
The address is set by a 8 pole DIP switch located on each addressable
unit. See further address list in appendix A.

Address switches
The address is set by the 8 pole DIP switch. The DIP switch values
follows the binary system.

1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128

The value of the address is set according to the switches set to ON

position. For example:

N~ ~ ~ ~ [;] ~ [;] [;] =47

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

The switches numbered 1,2,3,4 and 6 are set to ON position. The values
for these switches are 1+2+4+8+32=47.

Detectors
Important!
Seal the address switch on the detectors with the attached label after the
address has been set.

Address units
In addition to the loop address, address units and 110 units are equipped
with an ID dipswitch. The ID decides the function of the unit.
See appendix B for an ID list.

Addressable indication units

The address of addressable indication units is set identical to the loop
address of the detector, which it shall indicate.
Installation Manual Chapter 2: Installation 14
Salwico CS4000

Addressable Timers
The addressable timers are located on the detector loop in the same way
as any loop unit.
For UR-2/UR-2K type timers, three address DIP switches should be set:
1. The loop address for the timer itself.
2. The first address of the interval of detectors to be disconnected.
3. The last address of the interval of detectors to be disconnected.
For NS-TIMAC only the loop address has to be set.
Please note that timers do not affect the function of the manual call
points or heat detectors.

Short circuit isolators

The short circuit isolators are given a unique loop address in the same
way as the other loop units.
Installation Manual Chapter 2: Installation 15
Salwico CS4000

Electrical installation, Central equipment

Terminal layout
Since most systems are customer designed there exists no standard for
how the different boards are to be connected in the system.
See Appendix E for more information.

Control unit
The control units are connected via two separate channels, A and B.
Each channel to be routed in a separate cable, see the block diagram in
chapter 1. Minimum requirement for the cable to control units is
2x2x0.5mm2 twisted pairs.

Power supply
The rectifier board has an in-built change over function between the two
115/230VAC inputs (main and emergency). If there is only one
115/230VAC power supply available, it shall always be connected to
"emergency".
Installation Manual Chapter 3: Verification 16
Salwico CS4000

Chapter 3: Verification
The configuration of the loops must be performed by a person with a
good knowledge of the CS4000 fire system. The operator must have the
authority to work in access level 4. The system is delivered either with a
complete system configuration or a test configuration.
Consilium recommends that the addressable detector loops are tested
before connection to the central unit with the test device SE3000, to
verify the cable status and the addresses of the loop units.
Loops
We assume that there are no communication problems in the system
since the cable has already been tested but each loop has to be verified.
The verification procedure is described below, step by step.

1. Make sure that the system is connected to external power supply.

See chapter 2 for electrical connection.
2. Power up the system. The POWER LED is lit and the text CS4000
FIRE ALARM or similar is shown in the display. The system is now
up and running. Wait for a few minutes to let the system perform all
system checks. If the system detects a fault during the start-up, a
fault code is displayed in the control panel. For more information
about the fault codes, see Appendix C: Fault codes & Fuses.
3. Connect both A- and B-side of one of the loops to the LB3 loop
board (addressable loop units) or ZB zone board (conventional
detectors). Note: Conventional loops (zones) are not double fed and
do not have any B side.
4. Measure the voltage on the A side in the central unit. If all the loop
units are connected correctly (no polarity fault) the voltage should
be equal to about 30 VDC. If this is not the case, see Polarity fault
later on in this chapter.
5. Only for addressable LB loops: Verify that the correct number and
type of loop units are installed in the correct place. The system will
provide you with the requested information if you use the Menu
16 service menu/5 loops, choose the relevant loop and then press
2=Loops Units. A list of all units found on the loop will be
generated (see below). If a loop unit is missing, see Wrong number
of loop units later on in this chapter.

6. One loop is now verified and tested. Continue with the next loop.
Repeat step 3-5 for the rest of the loops.
7. Make a fire detector test of the complete fire alarm system. See
Testing later on in this chapter. Use appropriate test equipment
(smoke detector test gas, heat detector tester) to test each detector
and loop unit. The test is documented on the printer (option)
connected to a central unit, or print out the "Fire alarm history list"
found under: menu/ 7 History/ ] Fire History List. This list contains
the 500 latest fire alarms, but is cleared every time the system is
restarted.
8. We recommend you to use a top to bottom procedure if you have
any problem with the verification of the loop function. Start by
solving the problems that affect the whole loop and thereafter
continue with the problems with each address.

Testing
After installation of the fire alarm system the different parts of the system
shall be tested to assure correct function. The CS4000 has a special test
mode, which makes the testing easier.

When a zone is in test mode it will:

• Not activate any external alarm devices or controls in case of a
fire (this function can be turned off).
• The alarm level is lowered to give quick response to test gas.
• Detectors and manual call points in the zone will blink.
• Each tested detector and manual call point will indicate activation
with a red LED.
• The units in alarm are automatically reset when the heat or smoke
concentration is under the alarm level or if the manual call point
is reset.

Fire alarms from zones not in test mode will be handled normally by the
system.

Note: The tested zone will automatically return to normal operation after
two hours.

Test a fire-detecting zone

Put the zone into test mode under: menu/3 Disconnections/ ] New
disconn./ 5 Test Mode
Enter the zone number and confirm with OK button
The indications DISC., Test and Zone/Unit will be lit to confirm the test
mode.

It is now safe to test each detector, manual call point etc in this fire zone
during two hours. Use suitable testing equipment.
All alarms will be listed under: menu/ 7 History/ ] Fire History List
Installation Manual Chapter 3: Verification 18
Salwico CS4000

Reset the test mode

After testing it is important set the tested zone in normal condition again.
Make sure that there are no detectors or manual call points still in alarm
before leaving the test mode.
The zones in test mode are listed in the disconnection list, found under:
menu/3 Disconnections 12 Disconnection list.
Choose the zone in the disconnection list and then press RESET.

Test the control unit display

It is possible to test the alphanumerical display, all indications on the

control panel and the local buzzer with the function Test display, found
under: menu/5 Settings/4 Test display.

Salwico CS4000

Trouble shooting

The system will not power up

The rectifier board has an in-built change over function between the two
115/230V AC inputs (main and emergency). If there is only one
115/230VAC power supply available, it shall always be connected to
"emergency".

Note: The rectifier board will not start up if 115/230V AC is connected

to "main" unless the batteries are connected first.

Polarity fault
One or more loop units are not correctly installed if the measured
voltage is much less then 30 VDC. Proceed as follows to locate the loop
units with polarity fault:
1. Divide the cable in two halves.
2. Locate the polarity fault on one ofthe halves.
3. Divide this half of the cable again into two halves. Continue to
divide the cable into halves until you have found the polarity
fault.

All the section units are correctly installed when the measured voltage is
around 30 VDC.

• Restart the loop.

• Continue with the verification, return to Loops, step 5.

* The CS4000 system is equipped with a Hot Plug&Play function

enabling the user to add or delete detectors during normal operation
without the need to change the configuration file with a PC and
restarting the system.
The configuration file may be updated during normal operation from
service menu 6:5 or direct from the fault list, menu 1.1. See the separate
Service and maintenance manual for detailed info.

Note! Restart the loop by pressing the reset button on the LB3 loop
board after each time you have changed an address. You have to wait
for some minutes after restart to give the loop time to re-boot.

Address error
Use menu/ 6 Service menu/5 Loops, choose the relevant loop and then
press 2=Loops Units to list all found units on the loop. Compare the
found loop units with the ones configured. However, there is a
possibility that two or more loop units with the same address will
answer, which is reported as double address, no answer, bad
communication or as abnormal condition.
Installation Manual Chapter 3: Verification 21

Cable break
No loop units are answering.
- The cable is broken before the first loop unit if no answer is received
on a single fed loop.
- The cable is broken before the first loop unit and after the last loop
unit if the loop is a double fed loop.

Loop units are answering.

Look for the last loop units answering on each side of the loop. The
cable break is situated after or between the answering units.
See Chapter 2: Test the cable, test 1 for more information.

Earth fault
The CS4000 control unit will inform about which loop or central that
has an earth fault.

Examine the faulty loop to locate the earth fault.

See Chapter 2: Test the cable, test 3 for more details.
If the earth fault still remains after these steps, examine the cables to all
other devices connected to the fire alarm system.

Short circuit
No loop units answers
Search for the short circuits between the central unit and the first short
circuit isolator.

If only some loop units answer

The CS4000 control unit will report which short circuit isolators that
have been activated. Search for the short circuit between the fault
reported short circuit isolators to find the exact location of the fault.

See Chapter 2: Test the cable, test 2 for more details.

Mute faults
• Mute all the faults simultaneously by pressing the Mute button.

The fault indication stops flashing and turns over to steady yellow. The
fault is put in a fault list under menu/ 1 Fault Alarms/ 1 Fault List.

Reset faults
The cause of the problem must disappear before a fault can be reset.
The faults are reset from the Fault list under menu/ 1 Fault Alarms/ 1
Fault List.

The fault is reset

The fault is reset and it disappears from the fault list.

The fault is not reset

The fault is not reset and the reason for this is displayed.
Check the problem and deal with it. See Appendix C Fault codes &

Chapter 4: Commissioning requirements

The procedure described below in section Loop requirements is to be
followed by the installation organisation. If nothing else is agreed, no
commissioning engineer will be sent from Consilium Marine before the
steps below are taken and the appropriate papers are signed and faxed to
Consilium Marine.

Loop Requirements

The following specification is a checklist of requirements on the loops

for Salwico CS4000 fire alarm. The specification shall be used by the
installation organisation of loop units and cabling. Start with part A,
continue with part 8 and then part C. Part 8 must be used once for
every loop.

The list in part A (Loop configuration) includes all data you need when
configuring the loops. Part 8 (Loop status) is more like a checklist, use
it and follow it point by point. When you have completed this part you
should have filled in, signed and faxed the special document "Address
list/test report" one for each loop in the system. Part C (Central status) is
also a checklist but it deals with the status of the central unit.

Part A: Loop configuration

2
1. Minimum 2 x 0,3 mm unscreened cable.
Normally class requires 0.5-1.5 mm2 .
2. Maximum cable length: 2000 m ( 1OOOm if shielded cables are used).

consequence will be invoiced.
4. No power to be connected to the central unit without the
presence of a Consilium engineer!
The requirements are made in order to minimise the start-up costs for
yard/owner during the commissioning.

Summary
The following document must be filled in and faxed to Consilium
+46- 31 710 78 00 and your local Consilium representative in your
country before commissioning of the system starts:

• "Address list/test report", appendix A, one for each loop.

Installation Manual Chapter 5: Guidelines for fire alarm installations 26
Salwico CS4000

Chapter 5: Guidelines for fire alarm installations

General comments when installing fire detectors

• All addressable loop units must be programmed with a loop

address (DIP switch) before installation. See also appendix A.
• The adhesive label over the address switch must be sealed after
the address is set.
• Keep the protective dust cover fitted on smoke detectors until all
polluting activities such as construction work etc is finished.
• Mark each loop unit with zone and address number. Suitable
marking location for a detector is on its base. Special adhesive
labels for marking are available from Consilium.
• Please refer to the data sheet of each unit for detailed
information about connection and installation etc.
• Make sure that the unit has an IP class suitable for the
environment it shall be mounted in.
• Be sure to plug any un-used cable glands to maintain the correct
IP class.

Smoke detectors
• Smoke detectors shall if possible be installed in the center of the
supervised area or where the smoke most probably rises.
• Keep smoke detectors away from possible causes of unwanted
alarms such as showers, saunas, ovens and toasters.
• The detector shall not be installed behind air ducts etc delaying
the smoke to reach the detector, or near ventilation inlets that
blows smoke away from the detector. Minimum distance from
ventilation inlet is 0.5 m.
• The detector shall not be installed where subject to direct air
flow > 20 m/s.
• Covering area max 74m2 •
• Minimum distance from wall or bulkhead is 0.5 m.
• Maximum distance from wall or bulkhead is 5.5 m, and
maximum distance between two detectors is 11 m.
• In engine spaces, smoke detectors shall have 2m extra cable
slack to enable relocation of the detector.
• In cabins and in lockers the detectors shall be mounted with the
LED of the detector facing the door.

Heat detectors
• Heat detector shall be installed to the best place to protect the
area, mainly in the center of the space and in a place where the
detector works reliably.
• Alarm temperature of the detector shall be at least 30°C above
normal temperature.
Installation Manual Chapter 5: Guidelines for fire alarm installations 27
Salwico CS4000

• Avoid placing the detector near heat-generating devices, such as

ovens, saunas etc., which may cause unwanted alarms.
• Covering area max 37m2 •
• Maximum distance from wall or bulkhead is 4.5 m and between
two detectors it is 9 m.

Flame detector
• Flame detector to be installed where flames can be expected in
the initial stage of a fire.
• The flame detector shall be mounted so it has a clear view to the
anticipated fire.
• The detector should be mounted in the best angle (elevation and
azimuth) to cover the protection area. See the data sheet for the
actual flame detector for more information about angle of
protection etc.

IS smoke detector for EX areas

• The location of the detector shall be selected as for other smoke
detectors. See the earlier description.
• Detectors are connected to fire detection loop via an isolator
unit, which should be located in safe area right outside the
protected EX-area, easily accessible for service.

Conventional high temperature heat detector

• For saunas the detectors are generally installed in the ceiling.
• Alarm temperature ofthe detector shall be at least 30°C above
normal attainable temperature.
• The detector shall be connected to an address unit located
outside the hot area, where it can be easily accessed for service
and in as good environment as possible. Max cable length
between the sauna detector and the address unit is 25 metres.
• The address should be set on the address unit and the function
ID switch (small DIP-switch) should be set.
• An end of line unit shall be fitted inside the detector base.

Address units
• The address unit is used to interface conventional detectors (or
any dry closing contact) to the addressable fire detection loop.
• In addition to the loop address, the address unit has one ID
switch that has to be set, please see appendix B.

Manual call points

• Manual call point shall normally be mounted 1.6 m above floor
level.
• Max allowed distance between two call points is 40 m.

Short circuit isolator

• Short circuit isolators (SCI) can be installed between each fire
detection zone, where the loop cable leaves or enters the zone or
between decks. The location principle is to separate each fire
Installation Manual Chapter 5: Guidelines for fire alarm installations 28
Salwico CS4000

detection zone with SCI and therefore it is important to have it

close to where the cable changes to a new fire detection zone.
• Installation shall preferably be hidden from the public but easily
accessible for service.
• The short circuit isolators must be connected with correct
polarity.

Timers
• The timer unit is used for temporary disconnection of detectors
in areas where smoke or heat can occur under normal
circumstances.
• The timer should be mounted for easy access and operation and
well marked with its function.
• For UR-2 type timer:
In addition to the loop address, the address interval for the
detectors to be disconnected must be set on the two extra DIP
switches in the timer.

Bells
• Installation height normally 0.2 m from ceiling and max 2.2 m
from floor.
• After installation, make sure that the cables are free from the
gong, otherwise the sound output will be reduced.

Electrical siren
• Make sure to programme the siren to correct sound and
intermittence with the DIP switch inside the siren. More
information about how to set the DIP switch is found in the data
sheet for this unit.
• Tum the volume control to max.
• If the siren does not have a text clarifying the category of the
alarm (for example FIRE ALARM), it is recommended to mark
it accordingly.

Door holder magnet 65kp (650N)

• Normally used for door leafs less than 1050 mm wide.

Door holder magnet 130kp (1300N)

• Normally used for door leafs more than 1050 mm wide.

Door release switch

• This switch is normally to be placed on both sides of each fire
door. Make sure it is not hidden behind the door leaf when door
is in open position.
• Installation height normally 1.8 m above deck or floor level.

The ID switch must be set on the address unit's type AE and NS-AIN. The ID
defines the function of the unit and type of unit connected to the address unit.

Setting the ID
The ID is set by the 4-pole (NS-AIN type) or 5-pole (AE type) DIP switch
located on the address units. The DIP switch value follows the binary system.

Installation Manual Appendix F 42
Salwico CS4000

Appendix F: USCG Installation and operation

Addendum including component list for SALWICO CS4000
as U.S. Coast Guard Approved System
The approved component list identifies those components that may be used in locations requiring an exceptional
degree of protection. These locations include: (1) On deck; (2) A machinery space; (3) A cargo space; (4) A location
within a galley or pantry area, laundry, or water closet which contains a shower or bath and (5) Other spaces with
similar environmental conditions.

The fire detection system shall be installed as a fully addressable system. Any non-addressable initiating device
must be used with an addressing unit to provide an address for that device. Each addressing unit shall be used to
support only one device. Examples of non-addressable initiating devices are the manual call point NS-CPWP and
the UV-flame detector NS-DUV.

A trouble signal must be annunciated by the activation of the Models UR-2K and UR-2KN timers. Timer UR-2K
must be installed in a locker.
The fire control panels (CS4000) must be installed with two sources of external power. The internal battery cannot
be used to satisfy the requirement for a secondary source of power.
