0.1. AIM

To investigate the relationship between the different study plan of student of Architecture and
Environmental Design (AED) and their Grade Point Average (GPA) during the first semester.

0.2. OBJECTIVES
● To analyse the different study plan of AED students during semester 1.
● To access the GPA of AED students.
● To study the relationship between the AED students’ study plan and their final GPA in
semester 1.

0.3. PROBLEM STATEMENT

● The greater the contact hours of the students, the higher the possibilities for the students to get
lower GPA because students’ schedules are too packed.

0.4. BACKGROUND STUDY

Previously, IIUM had 1 to 2 years program for foundation studies. For students who did not exempted
in both language examinations which are Arabic Placement Test (APT) and English Placement Test
(EPT),they had to extend their study in foundation level to a maximum of two years. As they had to
study language until they pass the minimum requirement according to their courses. However in
2019,iium changed the education system where students are expected to finish their foundation level
studies in one year.
Below are the subjects needed to be taken by AED students:

The university requires students to take arab and English language and pass at a certain level
according to their courses requirement. For AED students, students are required to pass level 2 for
arab and level 6 for english. Language subjects does not have any total credit hours. Although
language subjects does not have any total credit hours, students will still have to attend six hours of
lecture for arab while eight hours of lecture for english. During the first semester, students were given
different study plans according to their EPT and APT results. Study plans of 16 and 19 total credit
hours with the need to take language subjects provides a variety in the number of total contact hours
of different study plans which are 25, 30, 31, 33 and 36.

The university calculate the students results by using Grade Point Average (GPA). GPA is calculated
by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted.
GPA may range between 0.00 to 4.00.

0.5. VARIABLES

● Independent variable: Total contact hours taken by students

● Dependent variable: Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained

0.6. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

Sampling technique used in this study is voluntary samples. Voluntary sample is one of the types of
non-probability samples. Questionnaires are made by using Google form and distributed to AED
students by publishing them on the internet through Whatsapp application. As the questionnaires are
distributed to AED students Whatsapp group, not everyone would answer them as it only attracts
those who are interested.
0.7. DATA COLLECTION METHOD

Data collection method: The method used to collect the desired data that will be used to achieve the
aim of the study is through an online questionnaire survey. The questionnaire's link is distributed to
the AED students' WhatsApp group to collect respondents feedback of study plan affected GPA
obtained by the students in the first semester. The questions require respondents' GPA of the first
semester and their opinion on whether taking language classes affects their study plan. This method
was used because it is convenient for researchers to collect respondents feedback and fast in obtaining
required data.
