MODULE 2: CHAPTER 2 SPEAKING MATHEMATICALLY

Lesson 1: Variables

Self-Check:

a. Are there numbers whose squares are smaller than the numbers themselves?

Solution:
The statement used "numbers" which is more than 1,
Meaning the variables that we are going to use is more than 1,
The variables for numbers are a and b
Variables for squared numbers is a 2 , b2
Then change the "smaller than" to < (less than sign)
Are there numbers a and b where a 2 , b2<a,b?

Self-Check:

b. For all real numbers, if is greater than 2, then is greater than 4.

a. If a real number is greater than 2, then its square is greater than 4.

b. For all real numbers greater than 2, x 2 is greater than 4.
c. If x is a real number than 2, then x 2 is greater than 4
d. The square of any real number greater than 2 is 4.
e. All real numbers greater than 2 have squares that is greater than 4.
Self-Check:

All bottles have cap.

Solution:

a. Every bottle has cap.

b. For all bottles B, there is a cap for B.
c. For all bottles B, there is a cap C such that C is a cap for B.

Self-Check:

There is a bird in this flock that is at least as heavy as every bird in the flock.
a. Some bird in this flock is at least as heavy as every bird in the flock.
b. There is a bird b in this flock such that b is at least as heavy as every bird in
the flock.
c. There is a bird b in this flock with the property that for every bird b in the flock,
b is at least as heavy as b.
