MCL431: CAM and Automation

Minor-1 Exam
MAX MARKS: 60 MAX TIME: 60 min

Instructions:
• Only Hand written notes are allowed in the exam.
• No printed or Xeroxed material allowed except Lecture Slides
• Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary and state them clearly.

Q1. In a Sheet metal forming press, the shape to be formed is hemispherical cup of radius 10 cm
in 2 mm thick mild steel sheet (can be ignored for stroke length). The force required to deform
sheet is 6.5 kN. The forming hammer should approach job from a distance of 25 cm. Flow rates of
Pump P1 and P2 are 25 lpm and 5 lpm respectively. Hydraulic cylinder has 37.5 mm bore dia and
12.5 mm rod dia.
i) Suggest the pressure rating of Pumps P1 and P2?
ii) What should be pressure setting of the unloading valve and pressure-relief valve?
(Assume that the unloading valve and relief-valve pressure setting (for their full pump ow
requirements) should be 50% higher than the pressure required to overcome frictional
pressure losses and the cylinder punching load, respectively.)
iii) Electric motor HP considering 75% ef ciency for both pumps.
(iv) What is the maximum production rate possible?
[ 20 + 15 + 15 + 10 Marks ]
Do we need packing friction to calculate the P1?

• Diameters of pipes: D1 = 40 mm, D2-D8 = 25 mm.

• Length of pipes: L1 = 50 cm, L2 = 60 cm, L3 = 40 cm, L4 = 60 cm, L5 = 30 cm, L6 = 150 cm, L7
= 100 cm, L8 = 60 cm.
• Consider Laminar ow in pipes.
• K value of all Tee Joints = 3.5 and Elbow joints = 2.0. K value for Check Valve = 3.0, DCV = 4.0,
Pressure Relief valve = 5.0.
• Hydraulic Fluid: Kinematic viscosity = 120 cS, Sp. gravity = 0.8
• Frictional pressure losses in pipes, ttings, valves are negligibly small during the punching
operation and can be ignored.
• Ignore small length of pipes for which dimensions are not given.
