A trip to Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii is a city on the island of Oahu. In the Hawaiian language, “Oahu” means “gathering
place.” It’s a good name. The people of Honolulu are from the U.S., Japan, Europe, and many other places.
In the past, Hawaii had kings, like this one, Kamehameha. Then, in 1898, Hawaii became a part of
the U.S.A. Waikiki is a famous beach in Honolulu with many popular hotels and shopping centers. There
are more than 65,000 visitors a day. Visitors can also see traditional Hawaiian music. Once a week, the
Royal Hawaiian Band gives a concert at the old royal palace. People here also do the hula, a traditional
Hawaiian dance. The movements of the hula dance have special meanings. They can tell a story, or describe
a famous king in history.
Hawaii is also famous for big waves—and with the big waves, surfing. Surfing has a very long
history here. Many surfers say Hawaii is the best place in the world for surfing. Honolulu is full of life, day
and night. On the Fourth of July, Hawaiians celebrate American Independence Day. There are fireworks at
night, and barbecues on the beach.
