According to Dr. Carl E. Balita, as a former student leader, we have a responsibility to inspire and
motivate others, as well as our own members, to achieve a common goal. And the only realization
that comes to me is that holding a leadership position is not the same as leading. To lead, you
must be able to connect with others, motivate them, and instill a feeling of ownership over
common goals. To improve your ability to lead others, you must be able to see how you think
and act, as well as how your actions affect others. Leading well involves a lifelong commitment
to personal improvement. However, many leaders choose to pursue management "tools" that
are "fast 'n' easy," such as personality type evaluations that reduce personnel to a few simple
behavioral tendencies, rather than the long and difficult task of expanding self-insight. Good
leadership can benefit from the use of tools. But none of these can replace fearless introspection,
feedback seeking, and dedicated behavioral change attempts for higher effectiveness and
beneficial impact on others.
