Course Content
This Course focuses on the family as a Unit in Society. The meaning, establishment,
sustenance and dissolution of the family as an institution, are explored in great detail as
the student is exposed to issues that portray the legal understanding of a family. As this
course particularly addresses the family in the African context, an attempt is made to
cover various forms of families in the true African context, Uganda in particular. It
should be noted however, that Uganda being a common law country, most of the
principles within the domestic relations law are borrowed from English law and married
with our cultural principles.

Course objectives
- To acquaint students with Family matters, functions of a family, the right to marry
and its consequences, nullity, dissolution and separation.

- To introduce students to an appreciation of a divergence of principles in the

family as an institution on the basis of settings and affiliations, such as the
Cultural setting, Muslim faiths, Christian faiths, Hindus, etc.
