I was one of those people that couldn´t even boil an egg and when I first got a place on my

own, I didn´t know where to start. I often ended up bringing home a pizza or putting hot water
in one of those instant pot noodles. Then, one day, I decided enough was enough and I signed
up for a course at a local adult education centre. On the way there for the first day, I was a bag
of nerves and dreading the idea that I might make a fool of myself. However, from the minute
the class started all those fears disappeared and I was completely hooked. I can´t say I´m an
expert now, but at least I´m not afraid to have a go and I have made some tasty meals since
then.(Alan)
B
From an early age I was often captivated watching my mum and dad getting the dinner ready.
There was a real magic in the air, as you could really feel their love for what they were doing,
and for each other. It was impossible not to want to get involved, and as a little kid I would
often sit on the kitchen work top, waiting for the spoon to be passed my way so I could try the
latest culinary delight. From the age of about nine or ten, I´d dabble at different things but I was
always a bit scared of getting it wrong and disappointing my parents. However, from the age of
about 13, I would make dinner for everyone at least once a week. Being left to my own devices
was when my skills really took off.(Betty)
C
Anyone who grew up in the 1960s would tell you that it was very common to know what you
would be eating each day of the week. I hated the routine and I never looked forward to
Tuesdays. My mother wasn´t the best cook, it had to be said, and that piece of overcooked
pork, with boiled carrots and mushy peas was my worst nightmare. It always made me feel
sick! So, it wasn´t until I started eating out, trying Chinese, Indian and other cuisines, that my
interest really kicked in. I had many disasters along the way, as I tried to replicate what I´d had
the night before, but I loved every second of it. Through the help of a couple of courses, and
watching many programmes on TV, I was eventually able to create quite a range of styles. It
has been so great to share that with friends, my family – and in particular, my mum.(Jack)
D
I´m somebody who´s been a bit of a late starter in the kitchen. In all honesty, I´d always left my
husband to do the cooking as he always made brilliant meals and that seemed to have
become his role. However, when we split up, I realised I´d taken that for granted and it was
about time I made the effort. It wasn´t easy at first, and I remember getting myself extremely
worked up. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed browsing through recipe books and visualising what I
could cook. The dishes that generally came up trumps were ones that were actually quite
traditional and reminded me of times in my childhood, spending time with my granny. These
days I find time in the kitchen quite therapeutic and sometimes I realise the whole day´s gone
making pies, sauces or things to be put away in the freezer.(Susan)
