HOW TO DIE TO THE OLD MAN AND LIVE IN THE NEW MAN
The Bible makes mention of two types of persons: the old man and the new man. The
Bible refers to this as the _______________. The Bible distinguishes between the two
natures with the old man being the one dominated by the spirit of _____________
(Ephesians 2:1-3) and the new man, which is the one that adopts a new lifestyle of
___________________, thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:10 & 3:16).
How is the old man?
The old man is also known as the ________________ of humanity, the adamic nature,
the flesh and the ego, all which can be summed up in one word: _______________.
“That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt
according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and
that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness
and holiness” - Ephesians 4:22-24
What is the nature of the old man?
The old man is as a result of the lies of Satan and the deceptive desires that _________
to sin.
1. ______________ of Satan
To ____________________ of God is equivalent to a lie, and that is what Satan
did. When man sinned, he accepted the lie of the devil and took on the sinful
nature (Romans 5:12).

2. The deceptive ________________

The sinful nature produces deceptive desires, which are rebellious and
perverted, contrary to the will of God and His laws.
The deceptive desires produced sin, and sin brought death.

“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and
enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when
it is full grown, brings forth death.” - James 1:14-15

When we operate according to the old man, deceptive desires will come, which
will lead us to sin, and this will produce death: spiritual, physical, mental, and
emotional to human beings.

The nature of the old man is ______________ because it has its origin in the
seed of Satan (Genesis 3:14-15). The enemy is the _____________ of rebellion,
and everything that he produces is rebellion.
A mark of a rebellious person is that he ___________ himself from God and
takes his own way, making sure he carries out His own will; seeking only to
satisfy himself.

How do we deal with the old man?

The Apostle Paul describes His experience with the old man:
“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with
me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do
not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is
no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find then a law, that evil is present
with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to
the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my
mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24. O
wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” - Romans 7:18-
24
The old man is a _________________ that cannot produce good fruit, for which the
only solution is to cut it and cast it into the fire. It __________________ executed!
“Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good
tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does
not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” - Matthew 7:17-19
The good news is that Jesus took on the cross our old sinful nature so that we would
have a new life in Him. This was a ____________________.
“knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be
done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” – Romans 6:6
What does the Bible say on the new man?
“that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt
according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and
that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness
and holiness.” - Ephesians 4:22-24
In these verses we can see three essential things:
1. The new man _______________ only by God. It cannot be produced by human
effort. Neither can religion, legalism, nor good works produce it. Only Christ can
produce it through the power of the Holy Spirit operating in our lives.
2. The nature of the new man is righteousness and holiness.

3. The new man proceeds from _________________. The old man was originated
from the devils lie, but the new man is birthed out of the Word.
God created a _________________ where His image and likeness was restored to
fulfill His divine purpose.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to
those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” - John 1:12-13
When we receive the gospel – which is a seed-, the Holy Spirit operates in us, and our
_________________ brings to existence a new man, with a new nature.
How do we develop and strengthen the new man in us?
The new man is ______________ in obedience.
▪ ______________ our mind
In Ephesians 4:22-24, Paul says that we must be renewed in the spirit of our
mind. Before, our mind was controlled by the lies of the devil; now we must
expose it to the light of the Word of God (Romans 12:2). When _____________
the law of God, ______________ begin to be produced in us. The one that works
that process in us is the Holy Spirit. Then the new man grows at the expense of
the old. John says, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
This is a __________________. Christ must increase and we – our old man or
old nature -, must decrease. For a new life to grow, the old life must die.

▪ ____________________ of the old man

Paul in his letter to the romans writes,
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its
lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to
sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your
members as instruments of righteousness to God.” (Romans 6:12-13).

In these verses we see that we __________________ the demands of the old

man; he will want to continue to act as if he still has rights over our life, and the
reason is that the old nature is corrupt; it is used to thinking and doing what is
sinful.

▪ ____________________________
Jesus said to His disciples: “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires
to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”
(Matthew 16:24).

In conclusion, we all have a sinful nature that we must crucify. That nature is as a result
of the lie and corruption of the devil. Corruption brought with it sin and rebellion to
humanity. The rebellion that one day Satan imparted to humanity is the old man
_____________________. Jesus was crucified for our sins, denying Himself so that we
would have the opportunity to be _______________. As children of God, we must make
the decision to execute the old man and deny ourselves, so that the new man within us
can be strengthened. In this manner we will _______________ to exercise dominion,
power, and authority in Jesus Christ.
