Assignment of Language Acquisition

What is critical period hypothesis?

The Critical Period Hypothesis is the idea that there is a specific period of time
during which language acquisition is most effective. This hypothesis suggests that
there is a critical period in childhood during which the brain is most receptive to
language learning, and that this window of opportunity closes as the brain
develops. It is believed that the critical period for language acquisition ends around
puberty, after which it becomes much more difficult to learn a new language.

Who is Genie Wiley? What is its relationship with critical period

hypothesis in first language Acquisition?
Genie Wiley was born in 1957 and spent the first 13 years of her life locked in a
room and deprived of social interaction. Her father believed she was intellectually
disabled and kept her isolated from the world. She was a girl who experienced
extreme isolation and abuse during her childhood by her father. she was tied to the
chair or bed in small room for 11 year and became a case study for scientists
studying language development. It's a heartbreaking story, but also one that sheds
light on the importance of social interaction for human development.
Genie's case was unique because she had not been exposed to language during the
critical period for language acquisition. When she was discovered, she was unable to
speak or understand any language. Despite intensive language therapy, she never
fully acquired language skills. Linguists tried to help her learn the language, but
their attempts failed. This case provided evidence for the critical period hypothesis
and suggested that there may be a specific period of time during which language
acquisition is most effective.after that it will be more difficult to lear or aquire any
language.
