Title: Turning Pig Manure from Waste to Asset- A 120 sow level (farrowing to fattening) small scale biogas
plant installation project
Participant Name: VinVan Farm
Farm/Office Name: Bangon, Aroroy, Masbate
Address:
Actual Situation/ Rationale/ Actual Situation:
Background/Problems In Masbate, only few commercial hog raisers having a biogas installations using manure as a substrate.
encountered: The manure from backyard piggeries is usually released directly to the surrounding water bodies,
creeks or environment. Utilizing the manure in biogas plant will lessen the contribution of greenhouse
gases (methane) in the environment and will contribute to sustainable energy/power on the farm or
rural areas. Especially that electricity at Masbate is not stable and not dependable.
Background:
The livestock of VinVan Farm is a farrow to finish small scale commercial swine farm with an existing
sow level of 120 heads. The estimated hog population is 1,620 heads (finishers) per year if one sow
produces 10 piglets with a pre-weaning and post mortality rate of 10%. The Standing Pig Population
(SPP) is as follows:
Pig Type Number of Heads Weight (Kg)
per year
Sows 120 200
Wean 1800 6
Finisher 1620 95
There are 6 existing buildings of the piggery farm used for gestating sows, lactating sows, boars, feeder
pigs and nursery pigs. The floor of each pigpen is slatted and perforated which allows the wastes to be
flushed to the canal underneath. Basing on the Standing Pig population stated above, the farm
produces 992 kg/day of manure.
The piggery farm occupies an area of 2,500 square meters in a 4-ha. Coconut-banana farm located at
Brgy. Bangon, Aroroy, Masbate.
Problems encountered:
The VinVan farm use a 1 set of 15kW diesel generator to provide electricity in the farm. It will power
the automatic feeder and tunnel ventilation of the pig buildings. Operation of generator set cause
surge on the operational cost of the farm, especially that diesel fuel cost ramps up these days.
Another problem is biogas technology package is not readily available in the Philippine market. Only
few vendors are offering a biogas technology package
Objectives (S- specific; Terminal Objective:
M-measurable; A-attainable; Determine a small-scale anaerobic digester design for biogas production suitable to be used as a
R- realistic; T- time-bounded) substitute fuel for the Internal Combustion Engine.
Enabling Objectives:
1. Investigate the economic feasibility of a small-scale biogas plant in contrast to diesel fueled internal
combustion engine.
2.
3. Building a test-pilot Internal Combustion Engine(formerly fueled by diesel) introducing methane
scrubbed of nitrogen and sulfur oxides came from the designed anaerobic digester. Test efficiency and
economic profitability
4.
