BODIES OF WATER IN
THE PHILIPPINES
Classification according to beneficial use
➢ The Environmental Management Bureau projected a
classification of one thousand nineteen (1,019) water
bodies in the country according to beneficial use by
CY 2019.
➢ The classification serves as a benchmark, hence water
bodies and its tributaries within WQMAs shall keep
its water quality within the Water Quality Guidelines
conforming to the water body’s classification (e.g.,
Class C or Class SC) or even improve the quality to
higher classification (e.g., from C to B or SC to SB).
➢ The water quality is assessed based on the set
beneficial use as defined in DENR Administrative
Order Number 2016-08 (Water Quality Guidelines
and General Effluent Standards).

➢ Classification means the categorization of all water
bodies considering the existing quality of the body of
water and most beneficial existing and future use of
said bodies of water and lands bordering them, such
as for residential, agricultural, aquacultural,
commercial, industrial, navigational, recreational,
wildlife conservation and aesthetic purposes, among
others.

➢ Beneficial use means the use of the environment or
any element or segment thereof conducive to public or
private welfare, safety and health; and shall include,
but not be limited to, the use of water for domestic,

livestock raising, industrial, recreational and other
purposes.

• Use of water for domestic purposes means the utilization of
water for drinking, washing, bathing, cooking or other household
needs, home gardens and watering of lawns or domestic animals;
• Use of water for municipal purposes means the utilization of
water for supplying water requirements of the community;
• Use of water for irrigation means the utilization of water for
producing agricultural crops;

13
• Use of water for power generation – means the utilization of
water for producing electrical or mechanical power;
• Use of water for fisheries means the utilization of water for the
propagation of cultured fish as a commercial enterprise;
• Use of water for livestock raising means the utilization of water
for large herds or flocks of animals raised as a commercial
enterprise;

14
• Use of water for industrial purposes means the utilization of
water in factories, industrial plants and mines, including the use
of water as an ingredient of a finished product; and

How does bodies of water contribute to Filipino way of living?

➢ Agriculture
➢ Sanitation
➢ Travel and Trade
➢ Generating power
➢ Separation and Protection

18
Agriculture

➢ The use of agricultural water makes it possible

to grow fruits and vegetables and raise
livestock, which is a main part of our diet.

19
Sanitation

➢ Water keeps you hydrated, it flushes out toxins, sends

nutrition around your body and aids in digestion.
Dehydration can cause headaches and loss of
concentration – in fact is your brain strongly influenced by
your hydration status.
➢ Moreover, water is also very important for increasing your
energy levels

20
Travel and Trade

➢  Water transportation is much more efficient, something that early

peoples discovered millennia ago. You can transport larger things on
water and over greater distances. It's no surprise then that some of
the world's first trade economies were developed around water.

21
Generating Power

➢ Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is a renewable source of energy

that generates power by using a dam or diversion structure to alter
the natural flow of a river or other body of water.
➢ Hydropower relies on the endless, constantly recharging system of the
water cycle to produce electricity, using a fuel—water—that is not
reduced or eliminated in the process.

22
Separation and Protection

➢ This brings us to another historical use of water. Water

creates a physical boundary between people, which can
be very helpful when trying to keep enemies at bay This
is one reason that many major cities around the world
are built near water.
