El Croquis El Escorial 2019

ISBN 9788412003420
$ 90.95* -- Idea Code 19357

Studio Mumbai is an Indian architecture firm founded and headed by Bijoy Jain. But it is also a team
of architects, engineers, carpenters, and masons that excels in blending Indian and Western
cultures. This monographic issue takes stock of the studio’s production from 2012 to the present,
from its most recognised works, such as Copper House II and the Ahmedabad Residence, to more
modest projects like the Ganga Maki Textile Studio in the Himalayan foothills, MPavilion 2016 in
Melbourne, and a winery extension in the south of France. The issue also features handmade
furniture shown at Maniera gallery in Brussels, which draws on universal materials and traditional
Indian craft.

Small Homes - The Making Of Bouwexpo Tiny Housing In Almere

Thoth Bussum 2019

ISBN 9789068687835
$ 26.80* -- Idea Code 19426

author: Jacqueline Tellinga

Are small homes going to be the new norm? By mid-century, a large number of people will be living
by themselves, meaning it is time the building industry gave small homes more attention. In the
Dutch city of Almere, BouwEXPO Tiny Housing launched an open ideas competition in 2016. The
winners built sixteen permanent and greatly varied houses at one location in the city, all of which are
actually lived in today. The houses naturally serve as inspiration for small dwellings elsewhere,
whether on vacant lots, as infill, on a roof, or in completely new neighbourhoods. This book offers an
in-depth reportage on the entire design, funding, and building process of the awarded small homes.

Architecture Of Appropriation. On Squatting As Spatial Practice.

Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam 2019

ISBN 9789083015200
$ 31.15* -- Idea Code 19393

author: Truijen, Boer, Otero Verzier, Eds.

The squatting movement in the Netherlands has played a major role in the design of both the urban
fabric and domestic interior, and continues to offer alternatives to the dominant, market-oriented
housing policies. This book acknowledges squatting as an architectural practice, analysing six
locations through drawings, interviews, and archival material to create a record of past and current
struggles, spaces, and oral histories, thereby forming the basis for a new governmental acquisition
policy. It brings together the expertise of the squatting movement with architects, archivists,
scholars, and lawyers in order to discuss approaches to what are often criminalised spatial
practices.

Vo Trong Nghia heads a leading architecture firm in Vietnam. Following his training in Japan, the
architect returned to his home country with the humble ambition of preserving its essential
landscapes in the face of booming urban development and prosperity. Peaceful forms in dialogue
with the environment, pavilions of exact geometry and vernacular inspiration, and light structures
where bamboo replaces steel are typical of his work. VTN Architects explores various paths in terms
of form and technique, yet with the common pursuit of sustainability and an active social agenda,
wherein vegetation also takes a central role. Fifteen works and three prototypes are featured in this

The eighth instalment of the revised ‘Villages and Towns’ series begins a journey through the
Iberian Peninsula. Focusing on the heritage of vernacular architectures, it looks at how emphasis is
placed on the landscape and climate, harmony among the community and local features, and issues
of environmental preservation and natural lighting. Local houses of a certain region share the same
underlying, invariable elements, which is the very reason for their achievement of diversity
integration that is a rarity among today’s rapidly changing architectural trends. With texts by the late
Spanish architect Fernando Higueras Díaz and photographs by Yukio Futagawa.

Peter Maerkli - In Search Of A Language

Cosa Mentale Marseille 2019

ISBN 9782491039004
$ 64.30* -- Idea Code 19376

author: Giorgio Azzariti

This publication is the outcome of the 2018 graduation dissertation of Italian architect Giorgio
Azzariti. His research focuses on the Swiss architect Peter Märkli, and is divided across four
sections: Journey, Imaginary, Language, and Reality. Märkli’s work does not fall easily into the
customary narrative of Swiss architecture at the close of the 20th century, and even less so at the
beginning of the 21st. Azzariti connects the markers of Märkli’s referential field, tracing a palpable
process of “maturation” in the architect’s cryptic work. Part architectural analysis, part travelogue, it
attempts to linke the geographic and biographical in the evolution of a unique and intensely personal
trajectory.

by sculptor and Schlegel specialist Hélène Bertin. Originally published in 2017 on the occasion of an
exhibition at CAC Brétigny, it forms a fitting tribute to Schlegel, who can be considered one of the
most important ceramists of 1950s. She conceived her works as sculptures inspired by nature,
primitive but sophisticated at the same time. An extensive look at her sculpted interiors and
architectural elements in plaster, especially the numerous fireplaces she created, is also featured.

Jennifer Caubet - Un Atelier A Soi

This book traces artist Jennifer Caubet’s work during her residency at the International Centre of
Glass and Plastic Arts (CIRVA) in Marseille from 2017 to 2019. Immersed in the studio at CIRVA as
well as in her own, Caubet was able to experience the many variations of the material through
dialogue with the centre’s team of glass technicians. The sculptural projects she developed in this
period question various recurring notions in her oeuvre. Designed as a journey through the early
stages of her work, the notebooks reproduced in this publication function as a score, offering a
reading of her preparatory drawings, annotations, and studio gestures, and ultimately leading to her
finished works.

Designed by Kim Taihun, this small book serves as a type specimen for INDEX, a bookshop located
in Seoul, Korea. The typeface was designed for the bookshop’s logo, and plays a role in its identity
as well. At first glance, the extreme contrast between the horizontal and vertical strokes, the
dramatic geometrical construction, and striking usage of the colour red seems incongruous with the
name of INDEX bookshop. But these characteristics are actually intentional frictions, which in turn
contribute a sufficient amount of wit and sense to the bookshop’s image.

author: Giliane Cachin

The second volume of the ‘Visual Archives’ series focuses on the largely unknown history of Bobst
Graphic. In the early 1970s this Swiss packaging company, seeking to combine new technology with
the high-tech capabilities of computing, launched its line of phototypesetting machines. These would
revolutionise the quality of typography. Through the efforts of leading Swiss designers, various font
families were developed for the new technique. Bobst Graphic’s pioneering role in the development
of phototypesetting has never been included in the rich history of Swiss graphic and font design.
Through first-hand accounts and personal interviews, new light is shed on this story.

Written and directed by filmmaker John Carpenter, ‘They Live’ (1988) is a cult classic. Despite
being dismissed by critics at the time, the film has since earned a reputation for its political satire,
social commentary, philosophical and technological forecasting, and visual aesthetics. Conceived by
designer Craig Oldham, this publication is a celebration of the film’s significance today, and
explores its influences, inspiration, and ideas, as well as its unnervingly topical social, cultural, and
political relevance. From the ‘Matrix’ films, popular ’80s nostalgia, and conspiracy theories, to
rampant consumerism and fake news, ‘They Live’ resonates in our world today, perhaps now more
than ever.

author: David Keenan, Sophy Hollington

'To Run Wild In It' is a book about tarot, an experimental novella, a "channelled" text and an
extension of ideas first broached in David Keenan’s acclaimed debut novel, 'This Is Memorial
Device'. Taking the maxim that the best way to understand the tarot is to create your own, Keenan
has reimagined the deck as the unfolding of parallel stories alive with uncanny oracular detail. In
collaboration with the artist Sophy Hollington, the pair have also created an accompanying deck
that, while still having an umbilical to the card’s archaic roots, future-visions it as a glam-punk portal
deep into the Now.

ISBN 9781912722266
$ 11.95* -- Idea Code 19366

author: Will Burns, Jess White

Germ Songs is a collaborative work by illustrator Jess White and poet Will Burns. These poems and
drawings take their shape from the land, utilising both artists’ interest in the natural world and the
questions that close observation ask of us as human beings living through the landscape and flora
that surround us. They also raise questions about access to these spaces, about property,
ownership, boundaries, and how these ideas have played out through history. These themes echo
ideas that have resonated with both White and Burns in the work of William Morris—the nature of
beauty, hard-won love, the importance of the natural world, and the influence of a northern
European literary tradition, but asking what all this might mean today.

satirical commentaries highlighting the tragicomedy of ordinary situations. But he has often also
collaborated with musicians. As part of the 2016 edition of the Printemps de septembre, he
designed a tailor-made project for the Institut supérieur des arts de Toulouse by providing
everything needed to organise a music festival: instruments, stage set, rehearsal studio, and
posters, all designed by him. He also wrote down the words to 31 songs that the guest musicians
could freely use. These texts are reproduced in this book with French translations, along with

Roma Publications Amsterdam 2019

ISBN 9789492811608
$ 31.15* -- Idea Code 19355

Photographer Arthur Ou was born in Taipei and currently lives and works in New York. This
publication is composed of his series of photographs of artists reading ‘Tractatus Logico-
Philosophicus’ by Ludwig Wittgenstein, with quotes from the book and an essay by Walter Benn
Michaels. It is an intriguing theme for a series of portraits, because “pictures of people reading
aren’t simply (or necessarily or even usually) portraits. In fact, if the default setting of the portrait
involves posing for the photographer, it would be more fitting to say that a picture of someone
reading is a kind of anti-portrait,” according to Michaels. The readers thus belong to the world
defined by the camera.

Autonomic Tarot

Rough Trade Books London 2019

ISBN
$ 30.00* -- Idea Code 19364

author: David Keenan, Sophy Hollington

'Autonomic Tarot' is the product of a collaboration between writer, David Keenan and artist, Sophy
Hollington. The pair have combined forces to create a 30 card linocut tarot deck, and instruction
booklet, that retains an umbilical to the card’s archaic roots, yet future-visions it as a glam-punk
portal deep into the Now. The deck accompanies (and was born from) Keenan’s experimental
novella 'To Run Wild In It'.

Madge Gill By Myrninerest

Rough Trade Books London 2019

ISBN 9781912722341
$ 37.50* -- Idea Code 19386

author: Sophie Dutton

‘Myrninerest’, a stunning new monograph on the visionary English outsider artist Madge Gill, is
published in conjunction with an exhibition of her work at the William Morris Gallery in London. With
selections from a seemingly endless body of work, it explores the natural creativity Gill possessed.
She often attributed her inspiration for the thousands of intricate ink drawings and embroideries to
her ethereal guide, after which this book is named. Gill was obsessed with spiritualism, and this
unseen force gave her a new outlook and energy which shaped her work, guiding her hand and
allowing her to find the strength and inspiration to take control over the many hardships in her life.

Michael Ashkin - Were It Not For

Fw: Books Amsterdam 2019

ISBN 9789490119805
$ 43.60* -- Idea Code 19417

American artist Michael Ashkin works across a range of media: painting, photography, video,
sculpture, and text. Uniting these diverse practices is a conceptual focus on the way that notions of
spaces and place, landscape and self are shaped by wider political and economic forces. The
photographs in this series were all shot in the Mojave Desert and are joined in this publication with a
textual work. The combination creates a powerful sense of unease throughout the document, one
that explores the idea of fear and haunting as an effect of the violent legacies contained within the
landscape, as well as a function of the technologies that we use to represent it.

Andres Gonzalez - American Origami

Fw: Books Amsterdam 2019

ISBN 9789490119812
$ 68.50* -- Idea Code 19403

‘American Origami’ is the result of six years of photographic research by Andres Gonzalez. The
project closely examines the epidemic of mass shootings in American schools, interweaving first-
person interviews, forensic documents, press materials, and original photographs. The book takes
its reader through a visual journey of shared grief and atonement to illuminate moments of beauty
and pose moral questions embedded in acts of collective healing. Bound in a unique way, the varied
elements repeat and fold into each other, creating a parallel world of past and present, and showing
the silenced landscape together with the personal artefacts created by those left behind.

La Movida: A Chronicle Of Turmoil

Cabeza De Chorlito Madrid 2019

ISBN 9788493968267
$ 49.60* -- Idea Code 19394

From 1978 and for almost a decade following, Madrid was both the origin and epicentre of an
upheaval. “La Movida” was not an artistic movement, nor did it have a political manifesto. Rather, it
was an emergence; a countercultural, youthful convulsion. The ostracism and short-sightedness that
characterised the dictatorship were being left behind and a restless cohort of young people was
diving into life. Four photographers captured the zeitgeist like no other: Miguel Trillo, Pablo Pérez-
Mínguez, Ouka Leele, and Alberto García-Alix. The impact of La Movida reverberated through all
the layers of Spanish society with a creativity and visual imagery that merged with the heart of the
times.

Nobuyoshi Araki - Theater Of Love

Case Publishing Rotterdam 2019

ISBN 9784908526121
$ 92.10* -- Idea Code 19421

“I’ve found a cabinet box, labelled “Theater of Love”. Opening it, there were about 150 prints
inside. They must have been taken around ’65, back when I was clicking away on an Olympus Pen
F, experimenting with thermal development, fooling around with printing and film developing
techniques. The photos are a record of me, the women and the life and the places of that era.
Seems like I called them “Theater of Love” in those days. But either way — good stuff. Good photos.
You can’t get this with digital.” - Nobuyoshi ArakiThe series consists of around 100 photographs
taken around the year 1965, when Araki was working at advertising giant Dentsu. The photos, first
shown at an exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery in February 2011, are presented as a postcard-sized
book, hidden in a Fuji photographic paper box replica, the same way Araki discovered his old prints.

Geert Goiris - World Without Us

Roma Publications Amsterdam 2019

ISBN 9789492811578
$ 60.00* -- Idea Code 19423

The downfall of the world is probably one of the oldest human conceptions. Representations of the
End are often embedded in religious narratives predicting an apocalyptic event in which only the
righteous will survive the final judgment. Yet since the end of World War II, a major shift has
occurred. The apocalypse is no longer a divine punishment, but it is humans who have gained the
ability to exterminate themselves. This book of recent photographs by Geert Goiris is the final piece
of a practice-based PhD research in the arts, conducted at the Royal academy of Fine Arts Antwerp,
in collaboration with the University of Antwerp. With an extensive interview by Steven Humblet.

Daido Moriyama: Record 41

Akio Nagasawa Tokyo 2019

ISBN
$ 39.30* -- Idea Code 19382

In this instalment of ‘Record’, Daido Moriyama writes that, if everything goes as planned, a movie
themed around him and the processes of his photographic work will be released later in 2019. He
also claims that he has not been inside a movie theatre in almost ten years. It seems strange, since
Moriyama has said that he spent a lot of time in cinemas when he was young. When someone once
asked him to name his favourite film, he pondered for a while before finally coming up with the
answer: David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’. The movie’s aesthetic, the darkness that permeates every
light and shadow, has evidently made a profound, indelible mark on Moriyama and his practice.

In The Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond To 3/11

Seigensha Kyoto 2018

ISBN 9784861524936
$ 103.95* -- Idea Code 19073

The events of March 11, 2011, when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, causing a massive
tsunami and the ensuing meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, is referred to as the
“triple disaster” in Japan. It became a defining moment in the nation’s collective memory. Many
photographers recorded the catastrophe’s physical effects, while some were compelled to interpret
its overarching significance through art. ‘In the Wake’ features more than 90 photographs by both
emerging talents and established artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Rinko Kawauchi, Naoya
Hatakeyama, and Daisuke Yokota. It is the Japanese edition of an exhibition catalogue first
published in 2015.

Michael Collins - The Family Silver

Lecturis Eindhoven 2019

ISBN 9789462263284
$ 24.90* -- Idea Code 19169

In the United States the rise of Kodachrome slide film paralleled the post-war consumer boom,
exuding confidence with pictures of gleaming cars, epic road trips, and Hollywood glamour. In
Britain, by contrast, humbler scenes show a paler, more restrained palette of colours. There was no
British equivalent of the American Dream. The society cautiously emerging from post-war austerity
was socially conservative, fatalistic and self-depreciating. Selected from the slide collection of
Michael Collins, these 42 amateur family photographs, most of which date from the late 1950s to the
early 1970s, are markedly reticent. All of the families are white, and the majority appear to be
suburban middle class.

Misha De Ridder - High Up Close By

Roma Publications Amsterdam 2019

ISBN 9789492811561
$ 56.05* -- Idea Code 19348

Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk, consecrated in 1306, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. After the
iconoclasm in 1566, the church slowly gained a serene, sober appearance. Over the course several
hundred years, it was enlarged and renovated until the building achieved its current form. Misha de
Ridder explored the tactility of the walls and the diversity of shapes in the Oude Kerk with a high-
resolution digital camera. The series brings us closer to the centuries of hands that constructed and
altered the church with exceptionally detailed images of painted walls illuminated by soft daylight
falling through the tall windows. Even the ink’s scent on the pages recalls this spatial experience.
