in Seoul, Korea. The typeface was designed for the bookshop’s logo, and plays a role in its identity
as well. At first glance, the extreme contrast between the horizontal and vertical strokes, the
dramatic geometrical construction, and striking usage of the colour red seems incongruous with the
name of INDEX bookshop. But these characteristics are actually intentional frictions, which in turn
contribute a sufficient amount of wit and sense to the bookshop’s image.

In the United States the rise of Kodachrome slide film paralleled the post-war consumer boom,
exuding confidence with pictures of gleaming cars, epic road trips, and Hollywood glamour. In
Britain, by contrast, humbler scenes show a paler, more restrained palette of colours. There was no
British equivalent of the American Dream. The society cautiously emerging from post-war austerity
was socially conservative, fatalistic and self-depreciating. Selected from the slide collection of
Michael Collins, these 42 amateur family photographs, most of which date from the late 1950s to the
early 1970s, are markedly reticent. All of the families are white, and the majority appear to be
suburban middle class.

Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk, consecrated in 1306, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. After the
iconoclasm in 1566, the church slowly gained a serene, sober appearance. Over the course several
hundred years, it was enlarged and renovated until the building achieved its current form. Misha de
Ridder explored the tactility of the walls and the diversity of shapes in the Oude Kerk with a high-
resolution digital camera. The series brings us closer to the centuries of hands that constructed and
altered the church with exceptionally detailed images of painted walls illuminated by soft daylight
falling through the tall windows. Even the ink’s scent on the pages recalls this spatial experience.
